First ReadingSirach 27:4-7*

From the Book of Sirach

4In the shaking of a sieve, the refuse remains,so does the filth of man in his thoughts.5The furnace tests the potter’s vessels;so the test of a person is in his thoughts.6The fruit of a tree discloses its cultivation,so is the utterance of the thought of a person’s heart.7Praise no man before you hear his thoughts, for this is how people are tested.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 92:2-3, 13-14, 15-16*

2It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord,to sing praises to your name, Most High,3to proclaim your loving kindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night,

13The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree.He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon.14They are planted in the Lord’s house. They will flourish in our God’s courts.

15They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green,16to show that the Lord is upright. He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Second Reading1 Corinthians 15:54-58*

From the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

54But when this perishable body will have become imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then what is written will happen:“Death is swallowed up in victory.”

55“Death, where is your sting?Hades, where is your victory?”

56The sting of death is sin,and the power of sin is the law.57But thanks be to God,who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.58Therefore, my beloved brothers,be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you knowthat your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

GospelLuke 6:39-45*

From the Gospel according to Luke

39He spoke a parable to them.“Can the blind guide the blind?Won’t they both fall into a pit?40A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyonewhen he is fully trained will be like his teacher.41Why do you see the speck of chaffthat is in your brother’s eye,but don’t consider the beam that is in your own eye?42Or how can you tell your brother,‘Brother, let me remove the speck of chaffthat is in your eye,’when you yourself don’t see the beamthat is in your own eye?You hypocrite!First remove the beam from your own eye,and then you can see clearly to remove the speck of chaffthat is in your brother’s eye.

43“For there is no good tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces good fruit.44For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people don’t gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.45The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.
