First ReadingHebrews 7:25—8:6

From the Letter to the Hebrews

25Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost thosewho draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.

26For such a high priest was fitting for us:holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;27who doesn’t need, like those high priests,to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.28For the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints a Son forever who has been perfected.

1Now in the things which we are saying, the main point is this:we have such a high priest, who sat down on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,2a servant of the sanctuary and of the true tabernaclewhich the Lord pitched, not man.3For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessarythat this high priest also have something to offer.4For if he were on earth,he would not be a priest at all, seeing there are priestswho offer the gifts according to the law,5who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, even as Moses was warned by Godwhen he was about to make the tabernacle, for he said, “See,you shall make everything according to the patternthat was shown to you on the mountain.”6But now he has obtained a more excellent ministry,by as much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which on better promises has been given as law.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 40:7-8a, 8b-9, 10, 17

7Sacrifice and offering you didn’t desire. You have opened my ears. You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.8Then I said, “Behold, I have come.

8It is written about me in the book in the scroll.9I delight to do your will, my God.Yes, your law is within my heart.”

10I have proclaimed glad news of righteousness in the great assembly.Behold, I will not seal my lips, Lord, you know.

17Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you.Let such as love your salvation say continually, “Let the Lord be exalted!”

GospelMark 3:7-12

From the Gospel according to Mark

7Jesus withdrew to the sea with his disciples;and a great multitude followed him from Galilee, from Judea,8from Jerusalem, from Idumaea, beyond the Jordan, and those from around Tyre and Sidon.A great multitude, hearing what great things he did, came to him.9He spoke to his disciplesthat a little boat should stay near himbecause of the crowd,so that they wouldn’t press on him.10For he had healed many,so that as many as had diseases pressed on himthat they might touch him.11The unclean spirits, whenever they saw him, fell down before him and cried,“You are the Son of God!”12He sternly warned themthat they should not make him known.
