First ReadingJeremiah 7:1-11*

From the Book of Jeremiah

1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,2“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim this word there, and say, ‘Hear the Lord’s word, all you of Judah, who enter in at these gates to worship the Lord.’”

3The Lord of Armies, the God of Israel says,“Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.4Don’t trust in lying words, saying, ‘The Lord’s temple, the Lord’s temple, the Lord’s temple, are these.’5For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings,if you thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbor;6if you don’t oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, and don’t shed innocent blood in this place, and don’t walk after other gods to your own hurt,7then I will cause you to dwell in this place,in the land that I gave to your fathers, from of old even forever more.8Behold, you trust in lying words that can’t profit.9Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods that you have not known,10then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered,’that you may do all these abominations?11Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes?Behold, I myself have seen it,” says the Lord.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 84:3, 4, 5-6a and 8a, 11*

3My soul longs, and even faints for the courts of the Lord.My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

4Yes, the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young, near your altars, Lord of Armies, my King, and my God.

5Blessed are those who dwell in your house. They are always praising you.6Blessed are those whose strength is in you,who have set their hearts on a pilgrimage.8They go from strength to strength.Every one of them appears before God in Zion.

11For a day in your courts is better than a thousand.I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God,than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

GospelJohn 11:19-27

From the Gospel according to John

or Luke 10:38-42

19Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary,to console them concerning their brother.20Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him,but Mary stayed in the house.21Therefore Martha said to Jesus,“Lord, if you would have been here,my brother wouldn’t have died.22Even now I know that whatever you ask of God,God will give you.”

23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24Martha said to him,“I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.26Whoever lives and believes in me will never die.Do you believe this?”

27She said to him, “Yes, Lord.I have come to believe that you are the Christ,God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”
