First Reading1 Kings 19:4-8

From the First Book of Kings

4But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. Then he requested for himself that he might die,and said, “It is enough. Now, O Lord, take away my life;for I am not better than my fathers.”

5He lay down and slept under a juniper tree;and behold, an angel touched him,and said to him, “Arise and eat!”

6He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again.7The Lord’s angel came again the second time, and touched him, and said,“Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.”

8He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty daysand forty nights to Horeb, God’s Mountain.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9

2I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.3My soul shall boast in the Lord. The humble shall hear of it and be glad.

4Oh magnify the Lord with me.Let’s exalt his name together.5I sought the Lord, and he answered me,and delivered me from all my fears.

6They looked to him, and were radiant.Their faces shall never be covered with shame.7This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him,and saved him out of all his troubles.

8The Lord’s angel encamps around those who fear him,and delivers them.9Oh taste and see that the Lord is good.Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

Second ReadingEphesians 4:30—5:2

From the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians

30Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God,in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.31Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice.32And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

1Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children.2Walk in love, even as Christ also loved usand gave himself up for us,an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.

GospelJohn 6:41-51

From the Gospel according to John

41The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, “I am the breadwhich came down out of heaven.”42They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?”

43Therefore Jesus answered them,“Don’t murmur among yourselves.44No one can come to me unless the Fatherwho sent me draws him;and I will raise him up in the last day.45It is written in the prophets,‘They will all be taught by God.’Therefore everyone who hears from the Fatherand has learned, comes to me.46Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God.He has seen the Father.47Most certainly, I tell you,he who believes in me has eternal life.48I am the bread of life.49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died.50This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die.51I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.Yes, the breadwhich I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:12-17

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:12-17

Brethren: We are debtors, not to the flesh, that we should live according to the flesh, for if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live. For whoever are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Now you have not received a spirit of bondage so as to be again in fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons, by virtue of which we cry, Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself gives testimony to our spirit that we are sons of God. But if we are sons, we are heirs also: heirs indeed of God and joint heirs with Christ.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 16:1-9

Ait autem víllicus intra se: Quid fáciam, quia dóminus meus aufert a me villicatiónem? fódere non váleo, mendicáre erubésco. Scio, quid fáciam, ut, cum amótus fúero a villicatióne, recípiant me in domos suas. Convocátis itaque síngulis debitóribus dómini sui, dicébat primo: Quantum debes dómino meo? At ille dixit: Centum cados ólei.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 16:1-9

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: There was a certain rich man who had a steward, who was reported to him as squandering his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear of you? Make an accounting of your stewardship, for you can be steward no longer.’ And the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do, seeing that my master is taking away the stewardship from me? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed. I know what I shall do, that when I am removed from my stewardship they may receive me into their houses.’ And he summoned each of his master’s debtors and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred jars of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and sit down at once and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘How much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred kors of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and write eighty.’ And the master commended the unjust steward, in that he had acted prudently; for the children of this world, in relation to their own generation, are more prudent than the children of the light. And I say to you, make friends for yourselves with the mammon of wickedness, so that when you fail they may receive you into the everlasting dwellings.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
