First Reading2 Corinthians 8:1-9

From the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

1Moreover, brothers,we make known to you the grace of Godwhich has been given in the assemblies of Macedonia,2how in a severe ordeal of affliction, the abundance of their joyand their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their generosity.3For according to their power,I testify, yes and beyond their power, they gave of their own accord,4begging us with much entreaty to receive this graceand the fellowship in the service to the saints.5This was not as we had expected, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God.6So we urged Titus, that as he had made a beginning before,so he would also complete in you this grace.7But as you abound in everything—in faith, utterance, knowledge, all earnestness, and in your love to us—see that you also abound in this grace.

8I speak not by way of commandment, but as proving through the earnestness of others the sincerity also of your love.9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 146:2, 5-6ab, 6c-7, 8-9a

2While I live, I will praise the Lord.I will sing praises to my God as long as I exist.

5Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help,whose hope is in the Lord, his God,6who made heaven and earth,the sea, and all that is in them;

6who keeps truth forever;7who executes justice for the oppressed;who gives food to the hungry. The Lord frees the prisoners.

8The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord raises up those who are bowed down. The Lord loves the righteous.9The Lord preserves the foreigners. He upholds the fatherless and widow, but he turns the way of the wicked upside down.

GospelMatthew 5:43-48

From the Gospel according to Matthew

43“You have heard that it was said,‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’44But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you,do good to those who hate you,and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,45that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?47If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others?Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?48Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

CollectOratio

Deus, in te sperántium fortitúdo, adésto propítius invocatiónibus nostris: et, quia sine te nihil potest mortális infírmitas, præsta auxílium grátiæ tuæ; ut, in exsequéndis mandátis tuis, et voluntáte tibi et actióne placeámus.

Per Dominum…

O God, the Strength of all them that put their trust in thee, mercifully accept our prayers, and because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without thee, grant us the help of thy grace, that in keeping of thy commandments we may please thee, both in will and deed.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Joánni Apóstoli

1 Joannnes 4:8-21

Lesson from the first letter of St John the Apostle

1 John 4:8-21

Dearly beloved: He that loveth not, knoweth not God: for God is charity. By this hath the charity of God appeared towards us, because God hath sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we may live by him. In this is charity: not as though we had loved God, but because he hath first loved us, and sent his Son to be a propitiation for our sins. My dearest, if God hath so loved us; we also ought to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abideth in us, and his charity is perfected in us. In this we know that we abide in him, and he in us: because he hath given us of his spirit. And we have seen, and do testify, that the Father hath sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God abideth in him, and he in God. And we have known, and have believed the charity, which God hath to us. God is charity: and he that abideth in charity, abideth in God, and God in him. In this is the charity of God perfected with us, that we may have confidence in the day of judgment: because as he is, we also are in this world. Fear is not in charity: but perfect charity casteth out fear, because fear hath pain. And he that feareth, is not perfected in charity. Let us therefore love God, because God first hath loved us. If any man say, I love God, and hateth his brother; he is a liar. For he that loveth not his brother, whom he seeth, how can he love God, whom he seeth not? And this commandment we have from God, that he, who loveth God, love also his brother.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 6:36-42

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 6:36-42

In that time Jesus said to his disciples: Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven. Give, and it shall be given to you: good measure and pressed down and shaken together and running over shall they give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you shall mete withal, it shall be measured to you again. And he spoke also to them a similitude: Can the blind lead the blind? do they not both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his master: but every one shall be perfect, if he be as his master. And why seest thou the mote in thy brother's eye: but the beam that is in thy own eye thou considerest not? Or how canst thou say to thy brother: Brother, let me pull the mote out of thy eye, when thou thyself seest not the beam in thy own eye? Hypocrite, cast first the beam out of thy own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to take out the mote from thy brother's eye.
