First ReadingLamentations 2:2, 10-14, 18-19

From the Book of Lamentations

2The Lord has swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacobwithout pity.He has thrown down in his wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah. He has brought them down to the ground. He has profaned the kingdom and its princes. verses 3–9 are not read10The elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground. They keep silence. They have cast up dust on their heads. They have clothed themselves with sackcloth. The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.11My eyes fail with tears. My heart is troubled. My bile is poured on the earth, because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the young children and the infants swoon in the streets of the city.12They ask their mothers,“Where is grain and wine?”when they swoon as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul is poured out into their mothers’ bosom.13What shall I testify to you? What shall I liken to you, daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I compare to you, that I may comfort you, virgin daughter of Zion? For your breach is as big as the sea.Who can heal you?14Your prophets have seen false and foolish visions for you. They have not uncovered your iniquity,to reverse your captivity, but have seen for you false revelations and causes of banishment. verses 15–17 are not read18Their heart cried to the Lord.O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night.Give yourself no relief.Don’t let your eyes rest.19Arise, cry out in the night,at the beginning of the watches!Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord.Lift up your hands toward him for the life of your young children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 74:1b-2, 3-5, 6-7, 20-21

1God, why have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?2Remember your congregation, which you purchased of old, which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your inheritance:Mount Zion, in which you have lived.

3Lift up your feet to the perpetual ruins, all the evil that the enemy has done in the sanctuary.4Your adversaries have roared in the middle of your assembly. They have set up their standards as signs.5They behaved like men wielding axes, cutting through a thicket of trees.

6Now they break all its carved work down with hatchet and hammers.7They have burned your sanctuary to the ground. They have profaned the dwelling place of your Name.

20Honor your covenant, for haunts of violence fill the dark places of the earth.21Don’t let the oppressed return ashamed.Let the poor and needy praise your name.

GospelMatthew 8:5-17

From the Gospel according to Matthew

5When he came into Capernaum,a centurion came to him, asking him for help,6saying, “Lord, my servant lies in the house paralyzed, grievously tormented.”

7Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”

8The centurion answered,“Lord, I’m not worthy for you to come under my roof.Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.9For I am also a man under authority, having under myself soldiers.I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes;and tell another, ‘Come,’ and he comes;and tell my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

10When Jesus heard it,he marveled and said to those who followed,“Most certainly I tell you,I haven’t found so great a faith, not even in Israel.11I tell you that many will come from the east and the west, and will sit down with Abraham,Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven,12but the children of the Kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”13Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way.Let it be done for you as you have believed.”His servant was healed in that hour.

14When Jesus came into Peter’s house,he saw his wife’s mother lying sick with a fever.15He touched her hand, and the fever left her.So she got up and served him.16When evening came, they brought to him many possessed with demons. He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,17that it might be fulfilledwhich was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying, “He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Hebrǽos.

Hebr 9:11-15

Reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Hebrews

Heb 9:11-15.

Brethren: When Christ appeared as high priest of the good things to come, He entered once for all through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made by hands - that is, not of this creation, - nor again by virtue of blood of goats and calves, but by virtue of His own blood, into the Holies, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkled ashes of a heifer sanctify the unclean unto the cleansing of the flesh, how much more will the Blood of Christ, Who through the Holy Spirit offered Himself unblemished unto God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And this is why He is mediator of a new covenant, that whereas a death has taken place for redemption from the transgressions committed under the former covenant, they who have been called may receive eternal inheritance according to the promise, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 Joann 5:6-8

1 John 5:6-8

This is He Who came in water and in blood, Jesus Christ; not in the water only, but in the water and in the blood.

℣.There are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three are one. Alleluia, alleluia.

1 John 5:9

℣.If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater. Alleluia.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem.

Joann 19:30-35

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 19:30-35

At that time, when Jesus had taken the wine, He said, It is consummated! And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. The Jews therefore, since it was the Preparation Day, in order that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath, for that Sabbath was a solemn day, besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other, who had been crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs; but one of the soldiers opened His side with a lance, and immediately there came out Blood and water. And he who saw it has borne witness, and his witness is true.

1 Cor 10:16

1 Cor. 10:16

The Cup of blessing that we bless, is it not the sharing of the Blood of Christ? And the Bread that we break, is it not the partaking of the Body of the Lord?

Through this divine rite, we beseech You, may we draw near to Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, and renew upon Your altar, O Lord of hosts, the sprinkling of blood more eloquent than that of Abel.

Holy Cross

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who didst establish the salvation of mankind on the tree of the Cross; that whence death came, thence also life might arise again, and that he, who overcame by the tree, by the tree also might be overcome: Through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
