First ReadingJob 3:1-3, 11-17, 20-23

From the Book of Job

1After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed the day of his birth.2Job answered:

3“Let the day perish in which I was born, the night which said, ‘There is a boy conceived.’ verses 4–10 are not read11“Why didn’t I die from the womb? Why didn’t I give up the spirit when my mother bore me?12Why did the knees receive me?Or why the breast, that I should nurse?13For now I should have lain down and been quiet.I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,14with kings and counselors of the earth, who built up waste places for themselves;15or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver;16or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been,as infants who never saw light.17There the wicked cease from troubling. There the weary are at rest. verses 18–19 are not read20“Why is light given to him who is in misery, life to the bitter in soul,21who long for death, but it doesn’t come;and dig for it more than for hidden treasures,22who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?23Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 88:2-3, 4-5, 6, 7-8*

2Lord, the God of my salvation,I have cried day and night before you.3Let my prayer enter into your presence.Turn your ear to my cry.

4For my soul is full of troubles. My life draws near to Sheol.5I am counted among those who go down into the pit.I am like a man who has no help,

6set apart among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more. They are cut off from your hand.

7You have laid me in the lowest pit,in the darkest depths.8Your wrath lies heavily on me.You have afflicted me with all your waves.

GospelLuke 9:51-56

From the Gospel according to Luke

51It came to pass, when the days were nearthat he should be taken up,he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem52and sent messengers before his face. They went and entered into a village of the Samaritans,so as to prepare for him.53They didn’t receive him, because he was traveling with his face set toward Jerusalem.54When his disciples,James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?”

55But he turned and rebuked them,“You don’t know of what kind of spirit you are.56For the Son of Man didn’t come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”

They went to another village.
