First Reading2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a

From the Second Book of Kings

8One day Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a prominent woman;and she persuaded him to eat bread. So it was, that as often as he passed by,he turned in there to eat bread.9She said to her husband,“See now, I perceive that this is a holy man of Godwho passes by us continually.10Please, let’s make a little room on the roof.Let’s set a bed, a table,a chair, and a lamp stand for him there. When he comes to us, he can stay there.”

11One day he came there, and he went to the room and lay there.

verses 12–13 are not read14He said, “What then is to be done for her?”

Gehazi answered, “Most certainly she has no son,and her husband is old.”

15He said, “Call her.”When he had called her, she stood in the door.16He said, “At this season next year, you will embrace a son.”

She said, “No, my lord, you man of God, do not lie to your servant.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 89:2-3, 16-17, 18-19

2I will sing of the loving kindness of the Lord forever. With my mouth, I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.3I indeed declare, “Love stands firm forever. You established the heavens.Your faithfulness is in them.”

16Blessed are the people who learn to acclaim you. They walk in the light of your presence, Lord.17In your name they rejoice all day.In your righteousness, they are exalted.

18For you are the glory of their strength. In your favor, our horn will be exalted.19For our shield belongs to the Lord, our king to the Holy One of Israel.

Second ReadingRomans 6:3-4, 8-11

From the Letter of Paul to the Romans

3Or don’t you know that all of uswho were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?4We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father,so we also might walk in newness of life. verses 5–7 are not read8But if we died with Christ,we believe that we will also live with him,9knowing that Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more.Death no longer has dominion over him!10For the death that he died, he died to sin one time;but the life that he lives, he lives to God.11Thus consider yourselves also to be dead to sin,but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GospelMatthew 10:37-42

From the Gospel according to Matthew

37He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me;and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me.38He who doesn’t take his crossand follow after me isn’t worthy of me.39He who seeks his life will lose it;and he who loses his life for my sake will find it.

40“He who receives you receives me,and he who receives me receives him who sent me.41He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. He who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.42Whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, most certainly I tell you,he will in no way lose his reward.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Joánnis Apóstoli

1 John 3:13-18

Lesson from the first letter of St John the Apostle

1 John 3:13-18.

Beloved: Do not be surprised if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. In this we have come to know His love, that He laid down His life for us; and we likewise ought to lay down our life for the brethren. He who has the goods of this world and sees his brother in need and closes his heart to him, how does the love of God abide in him? My dear children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue, but in deed and in truth.

Ps 7:2

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 14:16-24

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 14:16-24.

At that time, Jesus spoke to the Pharisees this parable: A certain man gave a great supper, and he invited many. And he sent his servant at supper time to tell those invited to come, for everything is now ready. And they all with one accord began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a farm, and I must go out and see it; I pray you hold me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am on my way to try them; I pray you hold me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ And the servant returned, and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house was angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, and the crippled, and the blind, and the lame.’ And the servant said, ‘Sir, your order has been carried out, and still there is room.’ Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and make them come in, so that my house may be filled. For I tell you that none of those who were invited shall taste of my supper.’

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
