First ReadingGenesis 2:4b-9, 15-17*

From the Book of Genesis

4This is the history of the generations of the heavensand of the earth when they were created,in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.5No plant of the field was yet on the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up;for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth. There was not a man to till the ground,6but a mist went up from the earth, and watered the whole surface of the ground.7The Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life;and man became a living soul.8The Lord God planted a garden eastward,in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.9Out of the ground the Lord God made every tree to growthat is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the gardenand the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. verses 10–14 are not read15The Lord God took the man,and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.16The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden;17but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil;for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 104:1-2a, 27-28, 29bc-30*

1Bless the Lord, my soul. The Lord, my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty.2He covers himself with light as with a garment. He stretches out the heavens like a curtain.

27These all wait for you, that you may give them their food in due season.28You give to them; they gather. You open your hand; they are satisfied with good.

29You hide your face; they are troubled. You take away their breath; they die and return to the dust.30You send out your Spirit and they are created. You renew the face of the ground.

GospelMark 7:14-23

From the Gospel according to Mark

14He called all the multitude to himself and said to them,“Hear me, all of you, and understand.15There is nothing from outside of the manthat going into him can defile him;but the things which proceed out of the man are thosethat defile the man.

17When he had entered into a house away from the multitude, his disciples asked him about the parable.18He said to them, “Are you also without understanding?Don’t you perceivethat whatever goes into the man from outside can’t defile him,19because it doesn’t go into his heart, but into his stomach, then into the latrine, making all foods clean?”20He said, “That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man.21For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts,22covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires,an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.23All these evil things come from withinand defile the man.”

Eccli 31:8-11

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 31:8-11

Happy the man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain, nor puts his trust in money nor in treasures! Who is he, that we may praise him? For he has done wonders in his life. He has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory forever; he could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not, so that his possessions are secure in the Lord, and the assembly of the Saints shall recount his alms.

The just man shall flourish like the palm tree, like a cedar of Lebanon shall he grow in the house of the Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 12:35-40

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 12:35-40

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, Let your loins be girt about and your lamps burning, and you yourselves like men waiting for their master’s return from the wedding; so that when he comes and knocks, they may straight-way open to him. Blessed are those servants whom the master, on his return, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, he will gird himself, and will make them recline at table, and will come and serve them. And if he comes in the second watch, and if in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants! But of this be assured, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would certainly have watched, and not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because at an hour that you do not expect, the Son of Man is coming.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
