First ReadingSirach 44:1, 9-13

From the Book of Sirach

1Let us now praise famous men,our ancestors in their generations. verses 2–8 are not read9But of others, there is no memory.They perished as though they had not been.They become as though they had not been born,they and their children after them.10But these were men of mercy,whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten.11A good inheritance remains with their offspring.Their children are within the covenant.12Their offspring stand fast,with their children, for their sakes.13Their offspring will remain forever.Their glory won’t be blotted out.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 149:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6a and 9b

1Praise the Lord!Sing to the Lord a new song,his praise in the assembly of the saints.2Let Israel rejoice in him who made them.Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

3Let them praise his name in the dance!Let them sing praises to him with tambourine and harp!4For the Lord takes pleasure in his people.He crowns the humble with salvation.

5Let the saints rejoice in honor.Let them sing for joy on their beds.6May the high praises of God be in their mouths,and a two-edged sword in their hand,9to execute on them the written judgment.All his saints have this honor.Praise the Lord!

GospelMark 11:11-26

From the Gospel according to Mark

11Jesus entered into the temple in Jerusalem.When he had looked around at everything,it being now evening,he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

12The next day,when they had come out from Bethany, he was hungry.13Seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves,he came to see if perhaps he might find anything on it.When he came to it,he found nothing but leaves,for it was not the season for figs.14Jesus told it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!”and his disciples heard it.

15They came to Jerusalem,and Jesus entered into the templeand began to throw out thosewho sold and those who bought in the temple,and overthrew the money changers’ tablesand the seats of those who sold the doves.16He would not allow anyone to carry a container through the temple.17He taught, saying to them,“Isn’t it written,‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’?But you have made it a den of robbers!”

18The chief priests and the scribes heard it,and sought how they might destroy him.For they feared him,because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.

19When evening came, he went out of the city.20As they passed by in the morning,they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.21Peter, remembering, said to him, “Rabbi, look!The fig tree which you cursed has withered away.”

22Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God.23For most certainly I tell you,whoever may tell this mountain,‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’and doesn’t doubt in his heart,but believes that what he says is happening,he shall have whatever he says.24Therefore I tell you,all things whatever you pray and ask for,believe that you have received them,and you shall have them.25Whenever you stand praying,forgive, if you have anything against anyone;so that your Father,who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.

Lesson from the book of Joel

Joel 2:23-24; 26-27

Thus says the Lord God: O children of Sion, exult and rejoice in the Lord, your God! He has given you the teacher of justice: He has made the rain come down for you, the early and the late rain as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. You shall eat and be filled, and shall praise the name of the Lord, your God, because He has dealt wondrously with you; My people shall nevermore be put to shame. And you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel; I am the Lord, your God, and there is no other; My people shall nevermore be put to shame, says the Lord almighty.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 5:17-26

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 5:17-26

At that time, it came to pass on one of the days, that Jesus sat teaching. And there were Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting by, who had come out of every village of Galilee and Judea and out of Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And behold, some men were carrying upon a pallet a man who was paralyzed, and they were trying to bring him in and to lay him before Him. And as they found no way of bringing him in, because of the crowd, they went up onto the roof and lowered him through the tiles, with his pallet, into the midst before Jesus. And seeing their faith, He said, Man, your sins are forgiven you. And the Scribes and Pharisees began to argue, saying, Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God only? But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, answered and said to them, “Why are you arguing in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise and walk'?” But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins - He said to the paralytic - I say to you, arise, take up your pallet and go to your house. And immediately he arose before them, took up what he had been lying on, and went away to his house, glorifying God. And astonishment seized upon them all, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen wonderful things today.
