First ReadingJames 5:1-6

From the Letter of James

1Come now, you rich,weep and howl for your miseries that are coming on you.2Your riches are corruptedand your garments are moth-eaten.3Your gold and your silver are corroded,and their corrosion will be for a testimony against youand will eat your flesh like fire.You have laid up your treasure in the last days.4Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields,which you have kept back by fraud, cry out;and the cries of thosewho reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies.5You have lived in luxury on the earth,and taken your pleasure.You have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter.6You have condemnedand you have murdered the righteous one.He doesn’t resist you.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 49:14-15ab, 15cd-16, 17-18, 19-20

14This is the destiny of those who are foolish,and of those who approve their sayings.15They are appointed as a flock for Sheol.Death shall be their shepherd.

15The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning.Their beauty shall decay in Sheol,far from their mansion.16But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol,for he will receive me.

17Don’t be afraid when a man is made rich,when the glory of his house is increased;18for when he dies he will carry nothing away.His glory won’t descend after him.

19Though while he lived he blessed his soul—and men praise you when you do well for yourself—20he shall go to the generation of his fathers.They shall never see the light.

GospelMark 9:41-50

From the Gospel according to Mark

41For whoever will give you a cup of water to drink in my namebecause you are Christ’s,most certainly I tell you,he will in no way lose his reward.

42“Whoever will cause one of these little oneswho believe in me to stumble,it would be better for him if he were thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around his neck.43If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off.It is better for you to enter into life maimed,rather than having your two hands to go into Gehenna,into the unquenchable fire,45If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off.It is better for you to enter into life lame,rather than having your two feet to be cast into Gehenna,into the fire that will never be quenched—47If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out.It is better for you to enter into God’s Kingdom with one eye,rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehenna of fire,48‘where their worm doesn’t die,and the fire is not quenched.’49For everyone will be salted with fire,and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.50Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness,with what will you season it?Have salt in yourselves,and be at peace with one another.”

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Acts 8:5-8

In diébus illis: Philíppus descéndens in civitátem Samaríæ, prædicábat illis Christum. Intendébant autem turbæ his, quæ a Philíppo dicebántur, unanímiter audiéntes et vidéntes signa, quæ faciébat. Multi enim eórum, qui habébant spíritus immúndos, clamántes voce magna, exíbant. Multi autem paralýtici et claudi curáti sunt. Factum est ergo gáudium magnum in illa civitáte.

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 8:5-8

In those days, Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached the Christ to them. And the crowds with one accord gave heed to what was said by Philip, listening to him and seeing the miracles that he worked. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, went out of many possessed persons, and many paralytics and cripples were cured. So there was great joy in that city.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 9:1-6

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 9:1-6

At that time, having summoned the twelve apostles, Jesus gave them power and authority over all the devils, and to cure diseases. And He sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. And he said to them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and do not depart from thence. And whosoever will not receive you - go forth from that town, and shake off even the dust from your feet for a witness against them. And going forth, they went about from village to village, preaching the gospel and working cures everywhere.

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Who ascending above all in the heavens and sitting at Thy Right Hand, poured out the Holy Spirit upon the children of adoption. Wherefore the whole world doth rejoice with overflowing joy; and the heavenly Hosts also and the angelic Powers sing together the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
