First ReadingGenesis 15:1-12, 17-18

From the Book of Genesis

1After these things the Lord’s word came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Don’t be afraid, Abram.I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”

2Abram said, “Lord GOD,what will you give me,since I go childless, and he who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”3Abram said, “Behold, you have given no children to me:and, behold, one born in my house is my heir.”

4Behold, the Lord’s word came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir, but he who will come out of your own body will be your heir.”5The Lord brought him outside, and said, “Look now toward the sky,and count the stars,if you are able to count them.”He said to Abram, “So your offspring will be.”6He believed in the Lord, who credited it to him for righteousness.7He said to Abram, “I am the Lordwho brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees,to give you this land to inherit it.”

8He said, “Lord GOD,how will I know that I will inherit it?”

9He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old,a female goat three years old,a ram three years old,a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”10He brought him all these, and divided them in the middle, and laid each half opposite the other;but he didn’t divide the birds.11The birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.

12When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. Now terror and great darkness fell on him. verses 13–16 are not read17It came to pass that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold,a smoking furnaceand a flaming torch passed between these pieces.18In that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “I have given this land to your offspring, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates:

GospelMatthew 7:15-20

From the Gospel according to Matthew

15“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves.16By their fruits you will know them.Do you gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles?17Even so, every good tree produces good fruit, but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit.18A good tree can’t produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit.19Every tree that doesn’t grow good fruit is cut downand thrown into the fire.20Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

Léctio Jeremíæ Prophétæ

Jer 1:4-10

Et dixi: A a a, Dómine Deus: ecce, néscio loqui, quia puer ego sum.

Lesson from the book of Jeremias

Jer 1:4-10

In those days, the word of the Lord came to me thus: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you. Ah, Lord God! I said, I know not how to speak; I am too young. But the Lord answered me, Say not, ‘I am too young.’ To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak. Have no fear before them, because I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord. Then the Lord extended His hand and touched my mouth, saying, See, I place My words in your mouth! This day I set you over nations and over kingdoms, to root up and to tear down, to destroy and to demolish, to build and to plant, says the Lord almighty.

GospelEvangelium

Initium ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 1:5-17

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 1:5-17

In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zachary, of the course of Abia; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both were just before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. But they had no son, for Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years. Now it came to pass, while he was officiating in the order of his course as priest before God, according to the custom of the priest’s office, that he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord to burn incense. And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right of the altar of incense. And Zachary, seeing him, was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, Do not be afraid, Zachary, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son and you shall call his name John. And you shall have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great before the Lord; he shall drink no wine or strong drink, and shall be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb. And he shall bring back to the Lord their God many of the children of Israel, and he shall himself go before Him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the incredulous to the wisdom of the just; to prepare for the Lord a perfect people.
