First ReadingActs 2:1-11*

From the Acts of the Apostles

1Now when the day of Pentecost had come,they were all with one accord in one place.2Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind,and it filled all the house where they were sitting.3Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them,and one sat on each of them.4They were all filled with the Holy Spiritand began to speak with other languages,as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.

5Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews,devout men, from every nation under the sky.6When this sound was heard,the multitude came together and were bewildered,because everyone heard them speaking in his own language.7They were all amazed and marveled,saying to one another,“Behold, aren’t all these who speak Galileans?8How do we hear, everyone in our own native language?9Parthians, Medes, Elamites,and people from Mesopotamia,Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia,10Phrygia, Pamphylia,Egypt, the parts of Libya around Cyrene,visitors from Rome,both Jews and proselytes,11Cretans and Arabians—we hear them speaking in our languages the mighty works of God!”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 104:1ab and 24ac, 29bc-30, 31 and 34*

1Bless the Lord, my soul.The Lord, my God, you are very great.You are clothed with honor and majesty.24Lord, how many are your works!In wisdom, you have made them all.The earth is full of your riches.

29You hide your face; they are troubled.You take away their breath; they die and return to the dust.30You send out your Spirit and they are created.You renew the face of the ground.

31Let the Lord’s glory endure forever.Let the Lord rejoice in his works.34Let my meditation be sweet to him.I will rejoice in the Lord.

Second ReadingRomans 8:8-17*

From the Letter of Paul to the Romans

8Those who are in the flesh can’t please God.

9But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit,if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you.But if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.10If Christ is in you,the body is dead because of sin,but the spirit is alive because of righteousness.11But if the Spirit of himwho raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you,he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

12So then, brothers,we are debtors, not to the flesh,to live after the flesh.13For if you live after the flesh, you must die;but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God,these are children of God.15For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear,but you received the Spirit of adoption,by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

16The Spirit himself testifies with our spiritthat we are children of God;17and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ,if indeed we suffer with him,that we may also be glorified with him.

GospelJohn 14:15-16, 23-26*

From the Gospel according to John

15If you love me, keep my commandments.16I will pray to the Father,and he will give you another Counselor,that he may be with you forever:

verses 17–22 are not read23Jesus answered him,“If a man loves me,he will keep my word.My Father will love him,and we will come to him and make our home with him.24He who doesn’t love me doesn’t keep my words.The word which you hear isn’t mine,but the Father’s who sent me.

25“I have said these things to youwhile still living with you.26But the Counselor,the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,will teach you all things,and will remind you of all that I said to you.

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Acts 2:1-11

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 2:1-11.

When the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a violent wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as of fire, which settled upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy spirit and began to speak in foreign tongues, even as the Holy Spirit prompted them to speak. Now there were staying at Jerusalem, devout Jews, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound was heard, the multitude gathered and were bewildered in mind, because each heard them speaking in his own language. But they were all amazed and marvelled saying, Behold, are not all these that are speaking Galileans? And how have we heard each his own language in which he was born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphilia, Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, Jews also and proselytes, Cretens and Arabians, we have heard them speaking in our own languages of the wonderful works of God.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem

Joannes 14:23-31

Pacem relínquo vobis, pacem meam do vobis: non quómodo mundus dat, ego do vobis.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 14:23-31.

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: If anyone love Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. He who does not love Me, does not keep My words. And the word that you have heard is not Mine, but the Father’s Who sent Me. These things I have spoken to you while yet dwelling with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your mind whatever I have said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, or be afraid. You have heard Me say to you, ‘I go away and I am coming to you.’ If you loved Me, you would indeed rejoice that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it comes to pass, that when it has come to pass you may believe. I will no longer speak much with you, for the prince of the world is coming and in Me he has nothing. But he comes that the world may know that I love the Father, and that I do as the Father has commanded Me.

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Who ascending above all in the heavens and sitting at Thy Right Hand, poured out the Holy Spirit upon the children of adoption. Wherefore the whole world doth rejoice with overflowing joy; and the heavenly Hosts also and the angelic Powers sing together the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
