First ReadingJeremiah 7:23-28

From the Book of Jeremiah

23but this thing I commanded them, saying, ‘Listen to my voice, and I will be your God,and you shall be my people.Walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’24But they didn’t listen or turn their ear,but walked in their own counselsand in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.25Since the daythat your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day,I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them.26Yet they didn’t listen to me or incline their ear,but made their neck stiff. They did worse than their fathers.

27“You shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you.You shall also call to them, but they will not answer you.28You shall tell them,‘This is the nationthat has not listened to the Lord their God’s voice, nor received instruction.Truth has perished, and is cut off from their mouth.’

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9

1Oh come, let’s sing to the Lord.Let’s shout aloud to the rock of our salvation!2Let’s come before his presence with thanksgiving.Let’s extol him with songs!

6Oh come, let’s worship and bow down.Let’s kneel before the Lord, our Maker,7for he is our God.We are the people of his pasture, and the sheep in his care.Today, oh that you would hear his voice!

8Don’t harden your heart, as at Meribah,as in the day of Massah in the wilderness,9when your fathers tempted me,tested me, and saw my work.

GospelLuke 11:14-23

From the Gospel according to Luke

14He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke;and the multitudes marveled.15But some of them said,“He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of the demons.”16Others, testing him, sought from him a sign from heaven.17But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation.A house divided against itself falls.18If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.19But if I cast out demons by Beelzebul,by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.20But if I by God’s finger cast out demons, then God’s Kingdom has come to you.

21“When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own dwelling, his goods are safe.22But when someone stronger attacks him and overcomes him,he takes from him his whole armor in which he trusted, and divides his plunder.

23“He who is not with me is against me.He who doesn’t gather with me scatters.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Jeremíæ Prophétæ.

Jer 7:1-7

Lesson from the Prophecy of Jeremias

Jer 7:1-7

In those days, the following message came to me from the Lord: Stand at the gate of the house of the Lord, and there proclaim this message: ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Juda who enter these gates to worship the Lord! Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Reform your ways and your deeds, so that I may remain with you in this place. Put not your trust in the deceitful words: This is the temple of the Lord! The temple of the Lord! The temple of the Lord! Only if you thoroughly reform your ways and your deeds; if each of you deals justly with his neighbor; if you no longer oppress the resident alien, the orphan, and the widow; if you no longer shed innocent blood in this place, or follow strange gods to your own harm, will I remain with you in this place, in the land which I gave your fathers long ago and forever,’ says the Lord almighty.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 4:38-44

At ille síngulis manus impónens, curábat eos. Quibus ille ait: Quia et áliis civitátibus opórtet me evangelizáre regnum Dei: quia ídeo missus sum. Et erat prǽdicans in synagógis Galilǽæ.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 4:38-44.

At that time, Jesus rose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a great fever, and they besought Him for her. And standing over her He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she rose at once and began to wait on them. Now when the sun was setting, all who had persons sick with various diseases brought them to Him. And He laid His hands upon each of them and cured them. And devils also came forth from many, crying out and saying, You are the Son of God. And He rebuked them, and did not permit them to speak, because they know that He was the Christ. Now when it was day, He went out and departed into a desert place. And the crowds were seeking after Him, and they came to Him, and tried to detain Him, that he might not depart from them. But He said to them, To the other towns also I must proclaim the kingdom of God, for this is why I have been sent. And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

Lent

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who by this bodily fast, dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds and bestow on us strength and rewards; through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
