First ReadingJob 38:1, 8-11

From the Book of Job

1Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind,

verses 2–7 are not read8“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,9when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,10marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,11and said, ‘You may come here, but no further.Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 107:23-24, 25-26, 28-29, 30-31

23Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business in great waters,24these see the Lord’s deeds, and his wonders in the deep.

25For he commands, and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up its waves.26They mount up to the sky; they go down again to the depths.Their soul melts away because of trouble.

28Then they cry to the Lord in their trouble, and he brings them out of their distress.29He makes the storm a calm,so that its waves are still.

30Then they are glad because it is calm,so he brings them to their desired haven.31Let them praise the Lord for his loving kindness, for his wonderful deeds for the children of men!

Second Reading2 Corinthians 5:14-17

From the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

14For the love of Christ compels us;because we judge thus:that one died for all, therefore all died.15He died for all, that thosewho live should no longer live to themselves, but to him who for their sakes died and rose again.

16Therefore we know no one according to the flesh from now on.Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him so no more.17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away.Behold, all things have become new.

GospelMark 4:35-41

From the Gospel according to Mark

35On that day, when evening had come,he said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side.”36Leaving the multitude, they took him with them, even as he was, in the boat.Other small boats were also with him.37A big wind storm arose, and the waves beat into the boat,so much that the boat was already filled.38He himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion;and they woke him up and asked him,“Teacher, don’t you care that we are dying?”

39He awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace!Be still!” The wind ceased and there was a great calm.40He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?”

41They were greatly afraid and said to one another,“Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Joánnis Apóstoli

1 John 3:13-18

Lesson from the first letter of St John the Apostle

1 John 3:13-18.

Beloved: Do not be surprised if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. In this we have come to know His love, that He laid down His life for us; and we likewise ought to lay down our life for the brethren. He who has the goods of this world and sees his brother in need and closes his heart to him, how does the love of God abide in him? My dear children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue, but in deed and in truth.

Ps 7:2

In my distress I called to the Lord, and He answered me.

℣.O Lord, deliver me from lying lip, from treacherous tongue. Alleluia, alleluia.

Ps 7:2

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 14:16-24

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 14:16-24.

At that time, Jesus spoke to the Pharisees this parable: A certain man gave a great supper, and he invited many. And he sent his servant at supper time to tell those invited to come, for everything is now ready. And they all with one accord began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a farm, and I must go out and see it; I pray you hold me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am on my way to try them; I pray you hold me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ And the servant returned, and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house was angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, and the crippled, and the blind, and the lame.’ And the servant said, ‘Sir, your order has been carried out, and still there is room.’ Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and make them come in, so that my house may be filled. For I tell you that none of those who were invited shall taste of my supper.’

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
