From the Book of Genesis

5The Lord sawthat the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of man’s heart was continually only evil.6The Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him in his heart.7The Lord said, “I will destroy manwhom I have created from the surface of the ground—man, along with animals, creeping things, and birds of the sky—for I am sorry that I have made them.”8But Noah found favor in the Lord’s eyes.

some verses are not read1The Lord said to Noah,“Come with all of your household into the ship, for I have seen your righteousness before me in this generation.2You shall take seven pairs of every clean animal with you,the male and his female.Of the animals that are not clean, take two, the male and his female.3Also of the birds of the sky, seven and seven, male and female,to keep seed alive on the surface of all the earth.4In seven days, I will cause it to rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights.I will destroy every living thingthat I have made from the surface of the ground.”

5Noah did everything that the Lord commanded him. verses 6–9 are not read10After the seven days, the floodwaters came on the earth.

3The Lord’s voice is on the waters. The God of glory thunders, even the Lord on many waters.4The Lord’s voice is powerful. The Lord’s voice is full of majesty.

9The Lord’s voice makes the deer calve, and strips the forests bare.In his temple everything says, “Glory!”10The Lord sat enthroned at the Flood.Yes, the Lord sits as King forever.

GospelMark 8:14-21

From the Gospel according to Mark

14They forgot to take bread;and they didn’t have more than one loaf in the boat with them.15He warned them, saying, “Take heed:beware of the yeast of the Phariseesand the yeast of Herod.”

16They reasoned with one another, saying, “It’s because we have no bread.”

17Jesus, perceiving it,said to them, “Why do you reasonthat it’s because you have no bread?Don’t you perceive yet or understand? Is your heart still hardened?18Having eyes, don’t you see?Having ears, don’t you hear?Don’t you remember?19When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?”

They told him, “Twelve.”

20“When the seven loaves fed the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?”

They told him, “Seven.”

21He asked them, “Don’t you understand yet?”
