First ReadingSirach 48:1-4, 9-11

From the Book of Sirach

1Then Elijah arose, the prophet like fire. His word burned like a torch.2He brought a famine upon them, and by his zeal made them few in number.3By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens. He brought down fire three times.4How you were glorified, O Elijah, in your wondrous deeds!Whose glory is like yours? verses 5–8 are not read9You were taken up in a tempest of fire,in a chariot of fiery horses.10You were recorded for reproofs in their seasons,to pacify anger, before it broke out into wrath,to turn the heart of the father to the son,and to restore the tribes of Jacob.11Blessed are those who saw you,and those who have been beautified with love;for we also shall surely live.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 80:2ac and 3b, 15-16, 18-19

2Hear us, Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock, you who sit above the cherubim, shine out.3Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, stir up your might!Come to save us!

15Turn again, we beg you, God of Armies.Look down from heaven, and see, and visit this vine,16the stock which your right hand planted, the branch that you made strong for yourself.

18Let your hand be on the man of your right hand,on the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.19So we will not turn away from you.Revive us, and we will call on your name.

GospelMatthew 17:9a, 10-13

From the Gospel according to Matthew

9As they were coming down from the mountain,Jesus commanded them, saying, “Don’t tell anyone what you saw, until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”

10His disciples asked him, saying, “Then why do the scribes saythat Elijah must come first?”

11Jesus answered them,“Elijah indeed comes first, and will restore all things;12but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they didn’t recognize him,but did to him whatever they wanted to.Even so the Son of Man will also suffer by them.”13Then the disciples understoodthat he spoke to them of John the Baptizer.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

2 Cor 10:17-18; 11:1-2

Fratres: Qui gloriátur, in Dómino gloriétur.

Lesson from the second letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

2 Cor 10:17-18; 11:1-2

Brothers: He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commendeth himself, is approved, but he, whom God commendeth. Would to God you could bear with some little of my folly: but do bear with me. For I am jealous of you with the jealousy of God. For I have espoused you to one husband that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 13:44-52

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 13:44-52.

At that time, Jesus spoke this parable to His disciples: The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field; he who finds it hides it, and in his joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. When he finds a single pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net cast into the sea that gathered in fish of every kind. When it was filled, they hauled it out, and sitting down on the beach, they gathered the good fish into vessels, but threw away the bad. So will it be at the end of the world. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from among the just, and will cast them into the furnace of fire, where there will be the weeping, and the gnashing of teeth. Have you understood all these things? They said to Him, Yes. And He said to them, So then, every Scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings forth from his storeroom things new and old.

Common

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
