First Reading1 Kings 18:41-46

From the First Book of Kings

41Elijah said to Ahab, “Get up, eat and drink;for there is the sound of abundance of rain.”

42So Ahab went up to eat and to drink.Elijah went up to the top of Carmel;and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.43He said to his servant,“Go up now and look toward the sea.”

He went up and looked, then said, “There is nothing.”

He said, “Go again” seven times.

44On the seventh time,he said, “Behold, a small cloud,like a man’s hand,is rising out of the sea.”

He said, “Go up, tell Ahab,‘Get ready and go down,so that the rain doesn’t stop you.’”

45In a little while, the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain.Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.46The Lord’s hand was on Elijah;and he tucked his cloak into his beltand ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 65:10, 11, 12-13

10You visit the earth, and water it.You greatly enrich it.The river of God is full of water. You provide them grain, for so you have ordained it.

11You drench its furrows. You level its ridges. You soften it with showers. You bless it with a crop.

12You crown the year with your bounty.Your carts overflow with abundance.13The wilderness grasslands overflow. The hills are clothed with gladness.

GospelMatthew 5:20-26

From the Gospel according to Matthew

20For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceedsthat of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

21“You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones,‘You shall not murder;’and ‘Whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’22But I tell you that everyonewho is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment.Whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’will be in danger of the council.Whoever says, ‘You fool!’will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.

23“If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there rememberthat your brother has anything against you,24leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way.First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.25Agree with your adversary quicklywhile you are with him on the way;lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.26Most certainly I tell you,you shall by no means get out of there until you have paid the last penny.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Joánnis Apóstoli

1 John 3:13-18

Lesson from the first letter of St John the Apostle

1 John 3:13-18.

Beloved: Do not be surprised if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. In this we have come to know His love, that He laid down His life for us; and we likewise ought to lay down our life for the brethren. He who has the goods of this world and sees his brother in need and closes his heart to him, how does the love of God abide in him? My dear children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue, but in deed and in truth.

Ps 7:2

Dómine, Deus meus, in te sperávi: salvum me fac ex ómnibus persequéntibus me et líbera me. Allelúja.

Ps. 119:1-2.

In my distress I called to the Lord, and He answered me.

℣.O Lord, deliver me from lying lip, from treacherous tongue. Alleluia, alleluia.

Ps 7:2

℣.O Lord my God, in You I take refuge; save me from all my pursuers and rescue me. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 14:16-24

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 14:16-24.

At that time, Jesus spoke to the Pharisees this parable: A certain man gave a great supper, and he invited many. And he sent his servant at supper time to tell those invited to come, for everything is now ready. And they all with one accord began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a farm, and I must go out and see it; I pray you hold me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am on my way to try them; I pray you hold me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ And the servant returned, and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house was angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, and the crippled, and the blind, and the lame.’ And the servant said, ‘Sir, your order has been carried out, and still there is room.’ Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and make them come in, so that my house may be filled. For I tell you that none of those who were invited shall taste of my supper.’

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
