First ReadingPhilippians 1:1-11

From the Letter of Paul to the Philippians

1Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ,to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and servants:2Grace to you and peace from God our Fatherand the Lord Jesus Christ.

3I thank my God whenever I remember you,4always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy,5for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now;6being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.7It is even right for me to think this way on behalf of all of you, because I have you in my heart, because both in my bonds and in the defenseand confirmation of the Good News, you all are partakers with me of grace.8For God is my witness, how I long after all of you in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus.

9This I pray, that your love may abound yet moreand more in knowledge and all discernment,10so that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincereand without offense to the day of Christ,11being filled with the fruits of righteousnesswhich are through Jesus Christ,to the glory and praise of God.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 111:1-2, 3-4, 5-6

1Praise the Lord!I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,in the council of the upright, and in the congregation.2The Lord’s works are great, pondered by all those who delight in them.

3His work is honor and majesty. His righteousness endures forever.4He has caused his wonderful works to be remembered. The Lord is gracious and merciful.

5He has given food to those who fear him.He always remembers his covenant.6He has shown his people the power of his works,in giving them the heritage of the nations.

GospelLuke 14:1-6

From the Gospel according to Luke

1When he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, they were watching him.2Behold, a certain man who had dropsy was in front of him.3Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”

4But they were silent.

He took him, and healed him, and let him go.5He answered them, “Which of you,if your son or an ox fell into a well, wouldn’t immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?”

6They couldn’t answer him regarding these things.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Philippénses

Phil 1:6-11

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Philippians

Phil 1:6-11

Brethren: We are confident in the Lord Jesus that He Who has begun a good work in you will bring it to perfection until the day of Christ Jesus. And I have the right to feel so about you all, because I have you in my heart, all of you, alike in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the Gospel, as sharers in my joy. For God is my witness how I long for you all in the heart of Christ Jesus. And this I pray, that your charity may more and more abound in knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the better things, that you may be upright and without offense unto the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of justice, through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 22:15-21

Cógnita autem Jesus nequítia eórum, ait: Quid me tentátis, hypócritæ? Osténdite mihi numísma census. At illi obtulérunt ei denárium. Et ait illis Jesus: Cujus est imágo hæc et superscríptio? Dicunt ei: Cǽsaris. Tunc ait illis: Réddite ergo, quæ sunt Cǽsaris, Cǽsari; et, quæ sunt Dei, Deo.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 22:15-21

At that time, the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might trap Jesus in His talk. And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that You are truthful, and that You teach the way of God in truth, and that You care naught for any man; for You do not regard the person of men. Tell us, therefore, what do You think: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, Why do you test Me, you hypocrites? Show Me the coin of the tribute. So they offered Him a denarius. Then Jesus said to them, Whose are this image and the inscription? They said to Him, Caesar’s. Then He said to them, Render, therefore, to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.
