Feast · Ordinary Time · Sunday Cycle C · Psalter Week 4

First ReadingNumbers 21:4b-9

From the Book of Numbers

4They traveled from Mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea,to go around the land of Edom. The soul of the people was very discouragedbecause of the journey.5The people spoke against God and against Moses:“Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, there is no water, and our soul loathes this disgusting food!”

6The Lord sent venomous snakes among the people, and they bit the people. Many people of Israel died.7The people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and against you.Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.”Moses prayed for the people.

8The Lord said to Moses,“Make a venomous snake, and set it on a pole.It shall happen that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”9Moses made a serpent of bronze, and set it on the pole.If a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked at the serpent of bronze, he lived.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 78:1bc-2, 34-35, 36-37, 38

1Hear my teaching, my people.Turn your ears to the words of my mouth.2I will open my mouth in a parable.I will utter dark sayings of old,

34When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought God earnestly.35They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer.

36But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue.37For their heart was not right with him, neither were they faithful in his covenant.

38But he, being merciful, forgave iniquity, and didn’t destroy them.Yes, many times he turned his anger away, and didn’t stir up all his wrath.

Second ReadingPhilippians 2:6-11

From the Letter of Paul to the Philippians

6who, existing in the form of God,didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,7but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.8And being found in human form,he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross.9Therefore God also highly exalted him,and gave to him the name which is above every name,10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,11and that every tongue should confessthat Jesus Christ is Lord,to the glory of God the Father.

GospelJohn 3:13-17

From the Gospel according to John

13No one has ascended into heavenbut he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.14As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,15that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son,that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.17For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.
