First ReadingSirach 48:1-14

From the Book of Sirach

1Then Elijah arose, the prophet like fire.His word burned like a torch.2He brought a famine upon them,and by his zeal made them few in number.3By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens.He brought down fire three times.4How you were glorified, O Elijah, in your wondrous deeds!Whose glory is like yours?5You raised up a dead man from death,from Hades, by the word of the Most High.6You brought down kings to destruction,and honorable men from their sickbeds.7You heard rebuke in Sinai,and judgments of vengeance in Horeb.8You anointed kings for retribution,and prophets to succeed after you.9You were taken up in a tempest of fire,in a chariot of fiery horses.10You were recorded for reproofs in their seasons,to pacify anger, before it broke out into wrath,to turn the heart of the father to the son,and to restore the tribes of Jacob.11Blessed are those who saw you,and those who have been beautified with love;for we also shall surely live.12Elijah was wrapped in a whirlwind.Elisha was filled with his spirit.In his days he was not moved by the fear of any ruler,and no one brought him into subjection.13Nothing was too hard for him.When he was buried, his body prophesied.14As in his life he did wonders,so his works were also marvelous in death.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 97:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7

1The Lord reigns!Let the earth rejoice!Let the multitude of islands be glad!2Clouds and darkness are around him.Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

3A fire goes before him,and burns up his adversaries on every side.4His lightning lights up the world.The earth sees, and trembles.

5The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord,at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.6The heavens declare his righteousness.All the peoples have seen his glory.

7Let all them be shamed who serve engraved images,who boast in their idols.Worship him, all you gods!

GospelMatthew 6:7-15

From the Gospel according to Matthew

7In praying, don’t use vain repetitions as the Gentiles do;for they thinkthat they will be heard for their much speaking.8Therefore don’t be like them,for your Father knows what things you need before you ask him.9Pray like this:

“‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.10Let your Kingdom come.Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.11Give us today our daily bread.12Forgive us our debts,as we also forgive our debtors.13Bring us not into temptation,but deliver us from the evil one.For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.’

14“For if you forgive men their trespasses,your heavenly Father will also forgive you.15But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses,neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Acts 8:5-8

In diébus illis: Philíppus descéndens in civitátem Samaríæ, prædicábat illis Christum. Intendébant autem turbæ his, quæ a Philíppo dicebántur, unanímiter audiéntes et vidéntes signa, quæ faciébat. Multi enim eórum, qui habébant spíritus immúndos, clamántes voce magna, exíbant. Multi autem paralýtici et claudi curáti sunt. Factum est ergo gáudium magnum in illa civitáte.

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 8:5-8

In those days, Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached the Christ to them. And the crowds with one accord gave heed to what was said by Philip, listening to him and seeing the miracles that he worked. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, went out of many possessed persons, and many paralytics and cripples were cured. So there was great joy in that city.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 9:1-6

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 9:1-6

At that time, having summoned the twelve apostles, Jesus gave them power and authority over all the devils, and to cure diseases. And He sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. And he said to them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and do not depart from thence. And whosoever will not receive you - go forth from that town, and shake off even the dust from your feet for a witness against them. And going forth, they went about from village to village, preaching the gospel and working cures everywhere.

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Who ascending above all in the heavens and sitting at Thy Right Hand, poured out the Holy Spirit upon the children of adoption. Wherefore the whole world doth rejoice with overflowing joy; and the heavenly Hosts also and the angelic Powers sing together the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
