First Reading2 Corinthians 3:15—4:1, 3-6

From the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

15But to this day, when Moses is read,a veil lies on their heart.16But whenever someone turns to the Lord,the veil is taken away.17Now the Lord is the Spirit;and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.18But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror,are transformed into the same image from glory to glory,even as from the Lord, the Spirit.

1Therefore, seeing we have this ministry,even as we obtained mercy, we don’t faint. verse 2 is not read3Even if our Good News is veiled,it is veiled in those who are dying,4in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving,that the light of the Good News of the glory of Christ,who is the image of God,should not dawn on them.5For we don’t preach ourselves,but Christ Jesus as Lord,and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake,6seeing it is God who said,“Light will shine out of darkness,”who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 85:9ab and 10, 11-12, 13-14

9I will hear what God, the Lord, will speak,for he will speak peace to his people, his saints;but let them not turn again to folly.10Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,that glory may dwell in our land.

11Mercy and truth meet together.Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.12Truth springs out of the earth.Righteousness has looked down from heaven.

13Yes, the Lord will give that which is good.Our land will yield its increase.14Righteousness goes before him,and prepares the way for his steps.

GospelMatthew 5:20-26

From the Gospel according to Matthew

20For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceedsthat of the scribes and Pharisees,there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

21“You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones,‘You shall not murder;’and ‘Whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’22But I tell you that everyonewho is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment.Whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’will be in danger of the council.Whoever says, ‘You fool!’will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.

23“If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar,and there rememberthat your brother has anything against you,24leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way.First be reconciled to your brother,and then come and offer your gift.25Agree with your adversary quicklywhile you are with him on the way;lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge,and the judge deliver you to the officer,and you be cast into prison.26Most certainly I tell you,you shall by no means get out of there until you have paid the last penny.

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Acts 8:5-8

In diébus illis: Philíppus descéndens in civitátem Samaríæ, prædicábat illis Christum. Intendébant autem turbæ his, quæ a Philíppo dicebántur, unanímiter audiéntes et vidéntes signa, quæ faciébat. Multi enim eórum, qui habébant spíritus immúndos, clamántes voce magna, exíbant. Multi autem paralýtici et claudi curáti sunt. Factum est ergo gáudium magnum in illa civitáte.

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 8:5-8

In those days, Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached the Christ to them. And the crowds with one accord gave heed to what was said by Philip, listening to him and seeing the miracles that he worked. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, went out of many possessed persons, and many paralytics and cripples were cured. So there was great joy in that city.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 9:1-6

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 9:1-6

At that time, having summoned the twelve apostles, Jesus gave them power and authority over all the devils, and to cure diseases. And He sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. And he said to them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and do not depart from thence. And whosoever will not receive you - go forth from that town, and shake off even the dust from your feet for a witness against them. And going forth, they went about from village to village, preaching the gospel and working cures everywhere.

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Who ascending above all in the heavens and sitting at Thy Right Hand, poured out the Holy Spirit upon the children of adoption. Wherefore the whole world doth rejoice with overflowing joy; and the heavenly Hosts also and the angelic Powers sing together the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
