First ReadingIsaiah 38:1-6, 21-22, 7-8

From the Book of Isaiah

1In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death.Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, came to him,and said to him, “The Lord says,‘Set your house in order, for you will die, and not live.’”

2Then Hezekiah turned his face to the walland prayed to the Lord,3and said, “Remember now,Lord, I beg you, how I have walked before you in truthand with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in your sight.”Then Hezekiah wept bitterly.

4Then the Lord’s word came to Isaiah, saying,5“Go, and tell Hezekiah,‘The Lord, the God of David your father, says, “I have heard your prayer.I have seen your tears.Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life.6I will deliver youand this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city.

verses 9–20 are not read21Now Isaiah had said,“Let them take a cake of figs, and lay it for a poultice on the boil, and he shall recover.”22Hezekiah also had said,“What is the sign that I will go up to the Lord’s house?”7This shall be the sign to you from the Lord, that the Lord will do this thing that he has spoken.8Behold, I will cause the shadow on the sundial, which has gone down on the sundial of Ahaz with the sun,to return backward ten steps.”’”So the sun returned ten steps on the sundial onwhich it had gone down.

Responsorial PsalmIsaiah 38:10, 11, 12abcd, 16

From the Book of Isaiah

10I said, “In the middle of my life I go into the gates of Sheol.I am deprived of the residue of my years.”

11I said, “I won’t see the Lord, the Lord in the land of the living.I will see man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

12My dwelling is removed, and is carried away from me like a shepherd’s tent.I have rolled up my life like a weaver. He will cut me off from the loom. From day even to night you will make an end of me.

16Lord, men live by these things;and my spirit finds life in all of them. You restore me, and cause me to live.

GospelMatthew 12:1-8

From the Gospel according to Matthew

1At that time, Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the grain fields. His disciples were hungryand began to pluck heads of grain and to eat.2But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said to him,“Behold, your disciples do what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.”

3But he said to them,“Haven’t you read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him:4how he entered into God’s house and ate the show bread, which was not lawful for him to eat,nor for those who were with him,but only for the priests?5Or have you not read in the lawthat on the Sabbath day the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless?6But I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.7But if you had known what this means,‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’you wouldn’t have condemned the guiltless.8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 6:19-23

Quem ergo fructum habuístis tunc in illis, in quibus nunc erubéscitis? Nam finis illórum mors est. Nunc vero liberáti a peccáto, servi autem facti Deo, habétis fructum vestrum in sanctificatiónem, finem vero vitam ætérnam. Stipéndia enim peccáti mors. Grátia autem Dei vita ætérna, in Christo Jesu, Dómino nostro.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 6:19-23

Brethren: I speak in a human way because of the weakness of your flesh; for as you yielded your members as slaves of uncleanness and iniquity unto iniquity, so now yield your members as slaves of justice unto sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free as regards justice. But what fruit had you then from those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of these things is death. But now set free from sin and become slaves to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and as your end, life everlasting. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is life everlasting in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ps 46:2

Ps 33:12, 6

℣.Look to Him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame. Alleluia, alleluia.

Ps 46:2

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 7:15-21

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 7:15-21

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. By their fruits you will know them. Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore, by their fruits you will know them. Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father in heaven shall enter the kingdom of heaven.

Dan 3:40

Sicut in holocáustis aríetum et taurórum, et sicut in mílibus agnórum pínguium: sic fiat sacrifícium nostrum in conspéctu tuo hódie, ut pláceat tibi: quia non est confúsio confidéntibus in te, Dómine.

Dan 3:40

As though it were holocausts of rams and bullocks, or thousands of fat lambs, so let our sacrifice be in Your presence today, that it may please You; for those who trust in You cannot be put to shame, O Lord.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
