First ReadingGenesis 19:15-29*

From the Book of Genesis

15When the morning came, then the angels hurried Lot, saying, “Get up!Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city.”16But he lingered;and the men grabbed his hand, his wife’s hand, and his two daughters’ hands, the Lord being merciful to him;and they took him out, and set him outside of the city.17It came to pass, when they had taken them out, that he said, “Escape for your life!Don’t look behind you,and don’t stay anywhere in the plain.Escape to the mountains, lest you be consumed!”

18Lot said to them, “Oh, not so, my lord.19See now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your loving kindness, which you have shown to me in saving my life.I can’t escape to the mountain, lest evil overtake me, and I die.20See now, this city is near to flee to,and it is a little one.Oh let me escape there (isn’t it a little one?),and my soul will live.”

21He said to him, “Behold,I have granted your request concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city ofwhich you have spoken.22Hurry, escape there, for I can’t do anything until you get there.”Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

23The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar.24Then the Lord rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah sulfurand fire from the Lord out of the sky.25He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew on the ground.26But Lot’s wife looked back from behind him,and she became a pillar of salt.

27Abraham went up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord.28He looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and saw that the smoke of the land went up as the smoke of a furnace.

29When God destroyed the cities of the plain,God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the middle of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 26:2-3, 9-10, 11-12*

2Examine me, Lord, and prove me.Try my heart and my mind.3For your loving kindness is before my eyes.I have walked in your truth.

9Don’t gather my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men10in whose hands is wickedness;their right hand is full of bribes.

11But as for me, I will walk in my integrity.Redeem me, and be merciful to me.12My foot stands in an even place. In the congregations I will bless the Lord.

GospelMatthew 8:23-27

From the Gospel according to Matthew

23When he got into a boat, his disciples followed him.24Behold, a violent storm came up on the sea,so much that the boat was covered with the waves;but he was asleep.25The disciples came to him and woke him up,saying, “Save us, Lord!We are dying!”

26He said to them, “Why are you fearful,O you of little faith?”Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the sea,and there was a great calm.

27The men marveled, saying,“What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Petri Apóstoli

1 Pet. 5:6-11

Caríssimi: Humiliámini sub poténti manu Dei, ut vos exáltet in témpore visitatiónis: omnem sollicitúdinem vestram projiciéntes in eum, quóniam ipsi cura est de vobis. Sóbrii estote et vigiláte: quia adversárius vester diábolus tamquam leo rúgiens circuit, quærens, quem dévoret: cui resístite fortes in fide: sciéntes eándem passiónem ei, quæ in mundo est, vestræ fraternitáti fíeri. Deus autem omnis grátiæ, qui vocávit nos in ætérnam suam glóriam in Christo Jesu, módicum passos ipse perfíciet, confirmábit solidabítque. Ipsi glória et impérium in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Lesson from the first letter of St. Peter the Apostle

1 Pet. 5:6-11

Beloved: Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in the time of visitation; cast all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you. Be sober, be watchful! For your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goes about seeking someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same suffering befalls your brethren all over the world. But the God of all grace, Who has called us unto His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will Himself, after we have suffered a little while, perfect, strengthen and establish us. To Him is the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 15:1-10

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 15:1-10

At that time, the publicans and sinners were drawing near to Him to listen to Him. And the Pharisees and the Scribes murmured, saying, This man welcomes sinners and eats with them. But He spoke to them this parable, saying, What man of you having a hundred sheep, and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the desert, and go after that which is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it upon his shoulders rejoicing. And on coming home he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost.’ I say to you that, even so, there will be joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, more then over ninety-nine just who have no need of repentance. Or what woman, having ten drachmas, if she loses one drachma, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma that I had lost.’ Even so, I say to you, there will be joy among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
