First ReadingGenesis 41:55-57; 42:5-7a, 17-24a

From the Book of Genesis

55When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread, and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph. What he says to you, do.”56The famine was over all the surface of the earth.Joseph opened all the store houses, and sold to the Egyptians. The famine was severe in the land of Egypt.57All countries came into Egypt,to Joseph, to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all the earth. some verses are not read5The sons of Israel came to buy among those who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.6Joseph was the governor over the land.It was he who sold to all the people of the land.Joseph’s brothers came, and bowed themselves down to him with their faces to the earth.7Joseph saw his brothers, and he recognized them, but acted like a stranger to them, and spoke roughly with them.He said to them, “Where did you come from?”

They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.” verses 8–16 are not read17He put them all together into custody for three days.

18Joseph said to them the third day,“Do this, and live, for I fear God.19If you are honest men, then let one of your brothers be bound in your prison;but you go, carry grain for the famine of your houses.20Bring your youngest brother to me;so will your words be verified, and you won’t die.”

They did so.21They said to one another,“We are certainly guilty concerning our brother,in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us,and we wouldn’t listen. Therefore this distress has come upon us.”22Reuben answered them, saying, “Didn’t I tell you, saying, ‘Don’t sin against the child,’and you wouldn’t listen? Therefore also, behold, his blood is required.”23They didn’t know that Joseph understood them;for there was an interpreter between them.24He turned himself away from them, and wept. Then he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 33:2-3, 10-11, 18-19

2Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre.Sing praises to him with the harp of ten strings.3Sing to him a new song.Play skillfully with a shout of joy!

10The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing. He makes the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect.11The counsel of the Lord stands fast forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

18Behold, the Lord’s eye is on those who fear him,on those who hope in his loving kindness,19to deliver their soul from death,to keep them alive in famine.

GospelMatthew 10:1-7

From the Gospel according to Matthew

1He called to himself his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits,to cast them out,and to heal every disease and every sickness.2Now the names of the twelve apostles are these. The first, Simon, who is called Peter;Andrew, his brother;James the son of Zebedee;John, his brother;3Philip; Bartholomew;Thomas; Matthew the tax collector;James the son of Alphaeus;Lebbaeus, who was also called Thaddaeus;4Simon the Zealot;and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

5Jesus sent these twelve out and commanded them, saying, “Don’t go among the Gentiles, and don’t enter into any city of the Samaritans.6Rather, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.7As you go, preach, saying, ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!’

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 6:3-11

Fratres: Quicúmque baptizáti sumus in Christo Jesu, in morte ipsíus baptizáti sumus.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 6:3-11.

Brethren: All we who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death. For we were buried with Him by means of Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ has arisen from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall be so in the likeness of His resurrection also. For we know that our old self has been crucified with Him, in order that the body of sin may be destroyed, that we may no longer be slaves to sin; for he who is dead is acquitted of sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live together with Christ; for we know that Christ, having risen from the dead, dies now no more, death shall no longer have dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life that He lives, He lives unto God. Thus do you consider yourselves also as dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Marcum

Marc 8:1-9

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Mark

Mark 8:1-9

At that time, when there was a great crowd with Jesus, and they had nothing to eat, He called His disciples together and said to them, I have compassion on the crowd, for behold, they have now been with Me three days, and have nothing to eat; and if I send them away to their homes fasting, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come from a distance. And His disciples answered Him, How will anyone be able to satisfy these with bread, here in a desert? And He asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven. And He bade the crowd recline on the ground. Then taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to distribute; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few little fishes; and He blessed them, and ordered them to be distributed. And they ate and were satisfied; and they took up what was left of the fragments, seven baskets. Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He dismissed them.
