Gospel at the Procession with PalmsMark 11:1-10

From the Gospel according to Mark

or John 12:12-16

1When they came near to Jerusalem,to Bethsphage and Bethany,at the Mount of Olives,he sent two of his disciples2and said to them, “Go your way into the villagethat is opposite you.Immediately as you enter into it,you will find a young donkey tied,on which no one has sat.Untie him and bring him.3If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’say, ‘The Lord needs him;’and immediately he will send him back here.”

4They went away, and found a young donkey tied at the door outside in the open street, and they untied him.5Some of those who stood there asked them,“What are you doing, untying the young donkey?”6They said to them just as Jesus had said, and they let them go.

7They brought the young donkey to Jesusand threw their garments on it,and Jesus sat on it.8Many spread their garments on the way,and others were cutting down branches from the treesand spreading them on the road.9Those who went in front and thosewho followed cried out, “Hosanna!Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!10Blessed is the kingdom of our father Davidthat is coming in the name of the Lord!Hosanna in the highest!”

First ReadingIsaiah 50:4-7

From the Book of Isaiah

4The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with words him who is weary. He awakens morning by morning,he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.5The Lord GOD has opened my ear.I was not rebellious.I have not turned back.6I gave my back to those who beat me,and my cheeks to those who plucked off the hair.I didn’t hide my face from shame and spitting.7For the Lord GOD will help me.Therefore I have not been confounded. Therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I won’t be disappointed.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 22:8-9, 17-18, 19-20, 23-24

8All those who see me mock me.They insult me with their lips. They shake their heads, saying,9“He trusts in the Lord.Let him deliver him.Let him rescue him, since he delights in him.”

17For dogs have surrounded me.A company of evildoers have enclosed me.They have pierced my hands and feet.18I can count all of my bones. They look and stare at me.

19They divide my garments among them. They cast lots for my clothing.20But don’t be far off, Lord. You are my help. Hurry to help me!

23I will declare your name to my brothers.Among the assembly, I will praise you.24You who fear the Lord, praise him!All you descendants of Jacob, glorify him!Stand in awe of him, all you descendants of Israel!

Second ReadingPhilippians 2:6-11

From the Letter of Paul to the Philippians

6who, existing in the form of God,didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,7but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.8And being found in human form,he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross.9Therefore God also highly exalted him,and gave to him the name which is above every name,10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,11and that every tongue should confessthat Jesus Christ is Lord,to the glory of God the Father.

GospelMark 14:1—15:47

From the Gospel according to Mark

or Mark 15:1-39

1It was now two days before the Passoverand the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priestsand the scribes sought how they might seize him by deception and kill him.2For they said, “Not during the feast, because there might be a riot among the people.”

3While he was at Bethany,in the house of Simon the leper,as he sat at the table,a woman came having an alabaster jar of ointment of pure nard—very costly. She broke the jar and poured it over his head.4But there were some who were indignant among themselves, saying, “Why has this ointment been wasted?5For this might have been sold for more than three hundred denariiand given to the poor.”So they grumbled against her.

6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her?She has done a good work for me.7For you always have the poor with you,and whenever you want to,you can do them good;but you will not always have me.8She has done what she could. She has anointed my body beforehand for the burying.9Most certainly I tell you, wherever this Good News may be preached throughout the whole world, that which this woman has done will also be spoken of for a memorial of her.”

10Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests, that he might deliver him to them.11They, when they heard it,were glad, and promised to give him money. He sought how he might conveniently deliver him.

12On the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover, his disciples asked him,“Where do you want us to go and preparethat you may eat the Passover?”

13He sent two of his disciples and said to them,“Go into the city, and there a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him,14and wherever he enters in,tell the master of the house,‘The Teacher says,“Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’15He will himself show you a large upper room furnished and ready.Get ready for us there.”

16His disciples went out,and came into the city, and found things as he had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

17When it was evening he came with the twelve.18As they sat and were eating,Jesus said, “Most certainly I tell you,one of you will betray me—he who eats with me.”

19They began to be sorrowful, and to ask him one by one, “Surely not I?”And another said, “Surely not I?”

20He answered them, “It is one of the twelve,he who dips with me in the dish.21For the Son of Man goes as it is written about him,but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born.”

22As they were eating,Jesus took bread, and when he had blessed it,he broke it and gave to them, and said, “Take, eat. This is my body.”

23He took the cup, andwhen he had given thanks, he gave to them. They all drank of it.24He said to them, “This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many.25Most certainly I tell you,I will no more drink of the fruit of the vine untilthat day when I drink it anew in God’s Kingdom.”26When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27Jesus said to them,“All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written,‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’28However, after I am raised up,I will go before you into Galilee.”

29But Peter said to him,“Although all will be offended, yet I will not.”

30Jesus said to him,“Most certainly I tell you that you today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

31But he spoke all the more,“If I must die with you,I will not deny you.”They all said the same thing.

32They came to a place which was named Gethsemane. He said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”33He took with him Peter,James, and John, and began to be greatly troubled and distressed.34He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.Stay here and watch.”

35He went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.36He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me.However, not what I desire, but what you desire.”

37He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter,“Simon, are you sleeping?Couldn’t you watch one hour?38Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

39Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.40Again he returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy;and they didn’t know what to answer him.41He came the third time and said to them,“Sleep on now, and take your rest.It is enough. The hour has come.Behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.42Arise! Let’s get going.Behold, he who betrays me is at hand.”

43Immediately, while he was still speaking,Judas, one of the twelve, came—and with him a multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.44Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I will kiss, that is he.Seize him, and lead him away safely.”45When he had come, immediately he came to him and said, “Rabbi!Rabbi!” and kissed him.46They laid their hands on him and seized him.47But a certain one of those who stood by drew his swordand struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48Jesus answered them,“Have you come out,as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me?49I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you didn’t arrest me.But this is so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.”

50They all left him, and fled.51A certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth thrown around himself over his naked body. The young men grabbed him,52but he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.53They led Jesus away to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes came together with him.

54Peter had followed him from a distance, until he came into the court of the high priest. He was sitting with the officers, and warming himself in the light of the fire.55Now the chief priestsand the whole council sought witnesses against Jesus to put him to death, and found none.56For many gave false testimony against him,and their testimony didn’t agree with each other.57Some stood upand gave false testimony against him, saying,58“We heard him say,‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’”59Even so, their testimony didn’t agree.

60The high priest stood up in the middle, and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer? What is it which these testify against you?”61But he stayed quiet, and answered nothing.Again the high priest asked him,“Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”

62Jesus said, “I am.You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of the sky.”

63The high priest tore his clothes and said,“What further need have we of witnesses?64You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?”They all condemned him to be worthy of death.65Some began to spit on him,and to cover his face, and to beat him with fists, and to tell him, “Prophesy!”The officers struck him with the palms of their hands.

66As Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the maids of the high priest came,67and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said,“You were also with the Nazarene, Jesus!”

68But he denied it, saying,“I neither know nor understand what you are saying.”He went out on the porch, and the rooster crowed.

69The maid saw himand began again to tell those who stood by,“This is one of them.”70But he again denied it.After a little while again thosewho stood by said to Peter,“You truly are one of them, for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.”71But he began to curse and to swear,“I don’t know this man of whom you speak!”

72The rooster crowed the second time.Peter remembered the words that Jesus said to him,“Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”When he thought about that, he wept.

1Immediately in the morning the chief priests, with the elders, scribes, and the whole council, held a consultation, bound Jesus, carried him away, and delivered him up to Pilate.2Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”

He answered, “So you say.”

3The chief priests accused him of many things.4Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer?See how many things they testify against you!”

5But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate marveled.

6Now at the feast he used to release to them one prisoner, whomever they asked of him.7There was one called Barabbas, bound with his fellow insurgents, men who in the insurrection had committed murder.8The multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do as he always did for them.9Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”10For he perceivedthat for envy the chief priests had delivered him up.11But the chief priests stirred up the multitude, that he should release Barabbas to them instead.12Pilate again asked them,“What then should I do to himwhom you call the King of the Jews?”

13They cried out again, “Crucify him!”

14Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?”

But they cried out exceedingly, “Crucify him!”

15Pilate, wishing to please the multitude, released Barabbas to them, and handed over Jesus, when he had flogged him, to be crucified.

16The soldiers led him away within the court, which is the Praetorium;and they called together the whole cohort.17They clothed him with purple;and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on him.18They began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”19They struck his head with a reed and spat on him,and bowing their knees, did homage to him.20When they had mocked him, they took the purple cloak off him,and put his own garments on him. They led him out to crucify him.

21They compelled one passing by,coming from the country,Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus,to go with them that he might bear his cross.22They brought him to the place called Golgotha, which is, being interpreted,“The place of a skull.”23They offered him wine mixed with myrrh to drink, but he didn’t take it.

24Crucifying him, they parted his garments among them, casting lots on them, what each should take.25It was the third hour when they crucified him.26The superscription of his accusation was written over him:“THE KING OF THE JEWS.”27With him they crucified two robbers, one on his right hand, and one on his left.

29Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads and saying, “Ha!You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,30save yourself, and come down from the cross!”

31Likewise, also the chief priests mocking among themselves with the scribes said, “He saved others. He can’t save himself.32Let the Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, that we may see and believe him.”Those who were crucified with him also insulted him.

33When the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.34At the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”which is, being interpreted,“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

35Some of those who stood by,when they heard it,said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”

36One ran, and filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Let him be.Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down.”

37Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and gave up the spirit.38The veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom.39When the centurion, who stood by opposite him,saw that he cried out like this and breathed his last,he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

40There were also women watching from afar, among whom were both Mary Magdaleneand Mary the mother of James the lessand of Joses, and Salome;41who, when he was in Galilee, followed him and served him;and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

42When evening had now come, because it was the Preparation Day,that is, the day before the Sabbath,43Joseph of Arimathaea,a prominent council memberwho also himself was looking for God’s Kingdom, came.He boldly went in to Pilate, and asked for Jesus’ body.44Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead;and summoning the centurion,he asked him whether he had been dead long.45When he found out from the centurion,he granted the body to Joseph.46He bought a linen cloth, and taking him down, wound him in the linen cloth and laid him in a tombwhich had been cut out of a rock.He rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses, saw where he was laid.

Continuation ☩ of the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

℟.Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

Matt 21:1-9

At that time, when Jesus drew nigh to Jerusalem, and was come to Bethphage, unto Mount Olivet, then He sent two disciples, saying to them: Go ye into the village that is over against you, and immediately you shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them and bring them to Me. And if any man shall say anything to you, say ye, that the Lord hath need of them: and forthwith he will let them go. Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: Tell ye the daughter of Sion: Behold thy King cometh to thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of her that is used to the yoke. And the disciples going, did as Jesus commanded them. And they brought the ass and the colt, and laid their garments upon them, and made him sit thereon. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way: and others cut boughs from the trees, and strewed them in the way, and the multitudes that went before and that followed, cried, saying: Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.

℟.Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

S. By the words of the Gospel may our sins be blotted out.

Turba multa, quæ convénerat ad diem festum, clamábat Dómino: Benedíctus, qui venit in nómine Dómini: «Hosánna in excélsis».

Luc 19:37, 38

Cœpérunt omnes turbæ descendéntium gaudéntes laudáre Deum voce magna, super ómnibus quas víderant virtútibus, dicéntes: «Benedíctus qui venit Rex in nómine Dómini; pax in terra, et glória in excélsis».

Progrediente processione, cantatur sequens hymnus, populo, si fieri potest, duos primos versus continuo repetente, ut infra notatur.

The procession now takes place. When the priest places incense in the thurible, the deacon, turning toward the people, sings, the choir responding:

℣.Let us go forth in peace.

Everyone respond

℟.In the name of Christ. Amen.

The thurifer precedes with the smoking censer, followed by the subdeacon, bearing the processional cross between two acolytes carrying lighted candles. Then follow the clergy in order of rank, then the celebrant with the deacon on his left. Where it is custom for the people to join the procession, they follow the celebrant. All carry palms, and all or some of them sing the following anthems, hymns, and Psalms, during the whole time the procession lasts.

The multitude goeth forth to meet our Redeemer with flowers and palms, and payeth the homage due to a triumphant Conqueror: the Gentiles proclaim the Son of God; and their voices thunder through the skies in praise of Christ: Hosanna in the highest!

Let the faithful join with the Angels and children singing to the Conqueror of death: Hosanna in the highest!

A great multitude that was met together at the festival cried out to the Lord: Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest!

Luc 19:37, 38

Near the descent the whole multitude began with joy to praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, saying: Blessed be the King who cometh in the name of the Lord; peace on earth and glory on high.

Next the hymn is being sung. After each verse faithful repeat chorus: Gloria, laus.

Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem: praise thy God, O Sion.

Because He hath strengthened the bolts of thy gates: He hath blessed thy children within thee.

Who hath placed peace in thy borders: and filleth thee with the fat of corn.

Who sendeth forth His speech to the earth: His word runneth swiftly.

Who giveth snow like wool: scattereth mists like ashes.

He sendeth His crystal like morsels: Who shall stand before the face of His cold?

He shall send out His Word and shall melt them: His wind shall blow and the waters shall run.

Who declareth His word to Jacob: His justice and His judgements to Israel.

He hath not done in like manner to every nation: and His judgements He hath not made manifest to them.

Glory Be to the Father…

Ant. All praise Thy name highly and say: Blessed is He who cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

We are strewn with the shining palms before the Lord as He approacheth; let us all run to meet Him with hymns and songs, glorify Him and say: Blessed be the Lord!

Hail, our King, O Son of David, O world's Redeemer, whom prophets did foretell as the Saviour to come of the house of Israel. For the Father sent Thee into the world as victim for salvation; from the beginning of the world all the saints awaited Thee: Hosanna now to the Son of David! Blessed be He who cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

If the procession has gone outside, it may be custom in some places for the subdeacon to knock thrice on the door of the church with the shaft of the processional cross. The door is opened, and the procession enters the church, singing:

As our Lord entered the holy city, the Hebrew children, declaring the resurrection of life,

℟.With palm branches, cried out: Hosanna in the highest.

℣.When the people heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they went forth to meet Him:

℟.With palm branches, cried out: Hosanna in the highest.

The celebrant reaches the altar, turns to the people, and sings:

℣.The Lord be with you.

℟.And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

O Lord Jesus Christ, our King and Redeemer, in whose honor we have borne these palms and gone on praising Thee with song and solemnity: mercifully grant that whithersoever these palms are taken, there the grace of Thy blessing may descend; may every wickedness and trick of the demons be frustrated; and may Thy right hand protect those it hath redeemed. Who livest and reignest for ever and ever.

℟.Amen.

The sacred Ministers now change from red to purple vestments for the Mass.

Phil 2:5-11

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians

Phil 2:5-11

Brethren: Have this in mind in you which was also in Christ Jesus, Who, though He was by nature God, did not consider being equal to God a thing to be clung to, but emptied Himself, taking the nature of a slave and being made like unto men. And appearing in the form of man, He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to death, even to death on a cross. Therefore God also has exalted Him and has bestowed upon Him the Name that is above every name, (Kneel) so that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven, on earth and under the earth and every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father.

GospelEvangelium

Pássio Dómini nostri Jesu Christi secúndum Matthǽum.

Matt 26:36-75; 27:1-60.

Súrgite, eámus: ecce, appropinquávit, qui me tradet. Petrus autem sequebátur eum a longe, usque in átrium príncipis sacerdótum. C. Dicit illi Jesus: J. Tu dixísti. Verúmtamen dico vobis, ámodo vidébitis Fílium hóminis sedéntem a dextris virtútis Dei, et veniéntem in núbibus cœli. C. Tunc princeps sacerdótum scidit vestiménta sua, dicens: S. Blasphemávit: quid adhuc egémus téstibus? Ecce, nunc audístis blasphémiam: quid vobis vidétur? C. At illi respondéntes dixérunt: S. Reus est mortis. C. Tunc exspuérunt in fáciem ejus, et cólaphis eum cecidérunt, álii autem palmas in fáciem ejus dedérunt, dicéntes: S. Prophetíza nobis, Christe, quis est, qui te percússit? C. Petrus vero sedébat foris in átrio: et accéssit ad eum una ancílla, dicens: S. Et tu cum Jesu Galilæo eras. C. At ille negávit coram ómnibus, dicens: S. Néscio, quid dicis. C. At illi dixérunt: S. Quid ad nos? C. At illi dixérunt: S. Barábbam. C. Ait illis præses: S. Quid enim mali fecit? C. At illi magis clamábant, dicéntes: S. Crucifigátur.

The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

Matt. 26:36-75; 27:1-60.

Then Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani; and He said to His disciples: J. Sit you here, till I go yonder and pray. C. And taking with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to grow sorrowful and to be sad. Then He saith to them: J. My soul is sorrowful even unto death; stay you here and watch with Me. C. And going a little further, He fell upon His face, praying and saying: J. My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou wilt. C. And He cometh to His disciples, and findeth them asleep. And He saith to Peter: J. What! Could you not watch one hour with Me? Watch ye, and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. C. Again the second time, He went and prayed, saying: J. My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, Thy will be done. C. And He cometh again, and findeth them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. And leaving them, He went again and He prayed the third time, saying the self-same word. Then He cometh to His disciples, and saith to them: J. Sleep ye now and take your rest; behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go; behold, he is at hand that will betray Me. C. As He yet spoke, behold Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the ancients of the people. And he that betrayed Him gave them a sign, saying: S. Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is He; hold Him fast. C. And forthwith coming to Jesus, he said: S. Hail, Rabbi. C. And he kissed Him. And Jesus said to him: J. Friend, whereto art thou come? C. Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus, and held Him. And behold one of them that were with Jesus, stretching forth his hand, drew out his sword, and striking the servant of the high priest, cut off his ear. Then Jesus saith to him: J. Put up again thy sword into its place; for all that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot ask My Father, and He will give Me presently more than twelve legions of Angels? How then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that so it must be done? C. In that same hour Jesus said to the multitudes: J. You are come out, as it were to a robber, with swords and clubs to apprehend Me. I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you laid not hands on Me. C. Now all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then the disciples, all leaving Him, fled. But they holding Jesus led Him to Caiphas the high priest, where the scribes and the ancients were assembled. And Peter followed Him afar off, even to the court of the high priest. And going in, he sat with the servants, that he might see the end. And the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put Him to death. And they found none, whereas many false witnesses had come in. And last of all there came two false witnesses; and they said: This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and after three days to rebuild it. And the high priest, rising up, said to Him: S. Answerest Thou nothing to the things which these witness against Thee? C. But Jesus held His peace. And the high priest said to Him: S. I adjure Thee by the living God, that Thou tell us if Thou be the Christ the Son of God. C. Jesus saith to him: J. Thou hast said it. Nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven. C. Then the high priest rent his garments, saying: S. He hath blasphemed; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy. What think you? C. But they answering, said: S. He is guilty of death. C. Then they did spit in His face and buffeted Him; and others struck His face with the palms of their hands, saying: S. Prophesy unto us, O Christ, who is he that struck Thee? C. But Peter sat without in the court, and there came to him a servant maid, saying: S. Thou also wast with Jesus the Galilean. C. But he denied it before them all, saying: S. I know not what thou sayest. C. And as he went out of the gate, another maid saw him, and she saith to them that were there: S. This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth. C. And again he denied it with an oath: S. I know not the man. C. And after a little while, they came that stood by and said to Peter: S. Surely thou also art one of them; for even thy speech doth discover thee. C. Then he began to curse and to swear that he knew not the man; and immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the words of Jesus which He had said: before the cock crow, thou wilt deny Me thrice. And going forth, he wept bitterly. And when morning was come, all the chief priests and ancients of the people took counsel against Jesus, that they might put Him to death. And they brought Him bound, and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Then Judas, who betrayed Him, seeing that He was condemned, repenting himself, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and ancients, saying: S. I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. C. But they said: S. What is that to us? Look thou to it. C. And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed, and went and hanged himself with a halter. But the chief priests having taken the pieces of silver, said: S. It is not lawful to put them into the corbona, because it is the price of blood. And after they had consulted together, they bought with them the potter's field, to be a burying-place for strangers. For this cause that field was called Haceldama, that is, the field of blood, even to this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him that was prized, whom they prized of the children of Israel: and they gave them unto the potter's field, as the Lord appointed to me. And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked Him, saying: S.Art Thou the King of the Jews? C. Jesus saith to him: J. Thou sayest it. C. And when He was accused by the chief priests and ancients, He answered nothing. Then Pilate saith to Him: S. Dost not Thou hear how great testimonies they allege against Thee? C. And He answered to him never a word, so that the governor wondered exceedingly. Now upon the solemn day the governor was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whom they would. And he had then a notorious prisoner that was called Barabbas. They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said: S. Whom will you that I release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus that is called Christ? C. For he knew that for envy they had delivered Him. And as he was sitting in the place of judgment his wife sent to him, saying: S. Have thou nothing to do with that just man, for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of Him. C. But the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people that they should ask Barabbas, and make Jesus away. And the governor answering, said to them: S. Whither will you of the two to be released unto you? C. But they said: S. Barabbas. C. Pilate saith to them: S. What shall I do then with Jesus that is called Christ? C. They all call: S. Let Him be crucified. C. The governor said to them: S. Why, what evil hath He done? C. But they cried out the more, saying: S. Let Him be crucified. C. And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: S. I am innocent of the blood of this just man; look you to it. C. And the whole people answering, said: S. His blood be upon us and upon our children. C. Then he released to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered Him unto them to be crucified. Then the soldiers of the governor, taking Jesus into the hall, gathered together unto Him the whole band; and stripping Him they put a scarlet cloak about Him. And platting a crown of thorns they put it upon His head and a reed in His right hand. And bowing the knee before Him, they mocked Him, saying: S. Hail, King of the Jews. C. And spitting upon Him, they took the reed and struck His head. And after they had mocked Him, they took off the cloak from Him, and put on Him His own garments, and led Him away to crucify Him. And going out, they found a man of Cyrene, named Simon; him they forced to take up His cross. And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is, the place of Calvary. And they gave Him wine to drink mingled with gall; and when He had tasted He would not drink. And after they had crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They divided My garments among them, and upon my vesture they cast lots. And they sat and watched Him. And they put over His head His cause written: This is Jesus the King of the Jews. Then were crucified with Him two thieves; one on the right hand and one on the left. And they that passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads, and saying: S. Vah, Thou that destroyest the temple of God and in three days dost rebuild it, save Thine own self. If Thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. C. In like manner also the chief priests with the scribes and ancients, mocking, said: S. He saved others, Himself He cannot save; if He be the king of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him; He trusted in God, let Him now deliver Him if He will have Him; for He said: I am the Son of God. C. And the self-same thing the thieves also that were crucified with Him reproached Him with. Now from the sixth hour there was a darkness over the whole earth, until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying: J. Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? C. That is: J. My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me? C. And some that stood there and heard said: S. This man calleth Elias. C. And immediately one of them running took a sponge and filled it with vinegar and gave Him to drink. And the others said: S. Let be; let us see whether Elias will come to deliver Him. C. And Jesus again crying with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

Here all kneel and pause for a few moments.

And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from top even to the bottom; and the earth quaked and the rocks were rent; and the graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose, and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, came into the holy city, and appeared to many. Now the centurion and they that were with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake and the things that were done, were sore afraid, saying: S. Indeed this was the Son of God. C. And there were there many women afar off, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto Him: among whom was Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. And when it was evening, there came a certain rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded that the body should be delivered. And Joseph taking the body wrapt it up in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new monument, which he had hewed out in a rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the monument and went his way.

Ps 68:21-22

Insult has broken my heart, and I am weak; I looked for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, and I found none. Rather they put gall in My food and in My thirst they gave Me vinegar to drink.

Holy Cross

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who didst establish the salvation of mankind on the tree of the Cross; that whence death came, thence also life might arise again, and that he, who overcame by the tree, by the tree also might be overcome: Through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
