First ReadingTobit 12:1, 5-15, 20

From the Book of Tobit

1And Tobit called his son Tobias, and said to him, “See,my child, that the man which went with you have his wages, and you must give him more.”

verses 2–4 are not read5And he called the angel, and said to him, “Take half of all that you have brought.”

6Then he called them both privately, and said to them, “Bless God,and give him thanks, and magnify him,and give him thanks in the sight of all that live, for the things which he has done with you.It is good to bless God and exalt his name, showing forth with honor the works of God.Don’t be slack to give him thanks.7It is good to conceal the secret of a king, but to reveal gloriously the works of God.Do good, and evil won’t find you.8Good is prayer with fasting, alms, and righteousness.A little with righteousness is better than much with unrighteousness. It is better to give alms than to lay up gold.9Alms delivers from death, and it purges away all sin. Those who give almsand do righteousness will be filled with life;10but those who sin are enemies to their own life.11Surely I will conceal nothing from you.I have said, ‘It is good to conceal the secret of a king, but to reveal gloriously the works of God.’12And now, when you prayed, and Sarah your daughter-in-law,I brought the memorial of your prayer before the Holy One.When you buried the dead, I was with you likewise.13And when you didn’t delay to rise up,and leave your dinner, that you might go and cover the dead, your good deed was not hidden from me.I was with you.14And now God sent me to heal youand Sarah your daughter-in-law.15I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angelswhich present the prayers of the saintsand go in before the glory of the Holy One.” verses 16–19 are not read20Now give God thanks, because I ascend to him who sent me.Write in a book all the things which have been done.”

Responsorial PsalmTobit 13:2, 6efgh, 7, 8

From the Book of Tobit

2For he scourges, and shows mercy. He leads down to the grave, and brings up again. There is no one who will escape his hand.

6If you turn to him with your whole heart and with your whole soul,to do truth before him, then he will turn to you,and won’t hide his face from you.See what he will do with you.Give him thanks with your whole mouth.Bless the Lord of righteousness.Exalt the everlasting King.I give him thanks in the land of my captivity, and show his strength and majesty to a nation of sinners.Turn, you sinners, and do righteousness before him.Who can tell if he will accept you and have mercy on you?

7I exalt my God.My soul exalts the King of heaven, and rejoices in his greatness.

8Let all men speak, and let them give him thanks in Jerusalem.

GospelMark 12:38-44

From the Gospel according to Mark

38In his teaching he said to them,“Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and to get greetings in the marketplaces,39and to get the best seats in the synagoguesand the best places at feasts,40those who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

41Jesus sat down opposite the treasuryand saw how the multitude cast money into the treasury. Many who were rich cast in much.42A poor widow came and she cast in two small brass coins, which equal a quadrans coin.43He called his disciples to himself and said to them,“Most certainly I tell you, this poor widow gave more than all thosewho are giving into the treasury,44for they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, gave all that she had to live on.”

Isa. 65:19; 65:23

I will rejoice in Jerusalem and exult in My people. No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there, or the sound of crying. My elect shall not toil in vain, nor beget children for sudden destruction; for a race blessed by the Lord are they and their offspring.

Ps 43:2

O God, our ears have heard, our fathers have declared to us, the deeds You did in their days.

Glory Be to the Father…

I will rejoice in Jerusalem and exult in My people. No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there, or the sound of crying. My elect shall not toil in vain, nor beget children for sudden destruction; for a race blessed by the Lord are they and their offspring.

Eccli 44:1-15

Laudémus viros gloriósos et paréntes nostros in generatióne sua. Multam glóriam fecit Dóminus magnificéntia sua a sǽculo. Dominántes in potestátibus suis, hómines magni virtúte et prudéntia sua præditi, nuntiántes in prophétis dignitátem prophetárum, et imperántes in præsénti pópulo, et virtúte prudéntiæ pópulis sanctíssima verba. In perítia sua requiréntes modos músicos, et narrántes cármina scripturárum. Hómines dívites in virtúte, pulchritúdinis stúdium habéntes: pacificántes in dómibus suis.

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Ecclus 44:1-15

Let us now praise men of renown, our ancestors, each in his own time. The Lord has wrought great glory through His magnificence from the beginning. Rulers of the earth by their authority, men of renown for their might, or counselors in their wisdom, or seers of all things in prophecy; resolute governors of peoples, or judges with discretion; authors skilled in composition, or poets with collected proverbs; composers of melodious psalms, or discoursers on lyric themes; stalwart men, solidly established, lovers of beauty, and at peace in their own estates - all these were glorious in their time, each illustrious in his day. Some of them have left behind a name that is remembered to their praise; but of others there is no memory, for it perished when they perished, and they are as though they had never lived, they and their children after them. Yet these also were godly men whose virtues have not been forgotten; their wealth remains in their families, their posterity are a holy inheritance, and their seed has stood in the covenants. And their children for their sakes remain forever; their seed and their glory shall not be forsaken. All these are buried in peace, but their name lives on and on. At gatherings their wisdom is retold and the assembly sings their praises.

Matt 5:1-12

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 5:1-12

At that time, Jesus seeing the crowds, went up the mountain. And when He was seated, His disciples came to Him. And opening His mouth He taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the earth. Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are you when men reproach you, and persecute you, and, speaking falsely, say all manner of evil against you, for My sake. Rejoice and exult, because your reward is great in heaven.

Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
