First ReadingSirach 4:11-18

From the Book of Sirach

11Wisdom exalts her sons,and takes hold of those who seek her.12He who loves her loves life.Those who seek her early will be filled with gladness.13He who holds her fast will inherit glory.Where he enters, the Lord will bless.14Those who serve her minister to the Holy One.The Lord loves those who love her.15He who listens to her will judge the nations.He who heeds her will dwell securely.16If he trusts her, he will inherit her,and his generations will possess her.17For at the first she will walk with him in crooked ways,and will bring fear and dread upon him,and torment him with her discipline,until she may trust his soul, and try him by her judgments.18Then she will return him again to the straight way,and will gladden him, and reveal to him her secrets.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 113:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8

1Praise the Lord!Praise, you servants of the Lord,praise the Lord’s name.2Blessed be the Lord’s name,from this time forward and forever more.

3From the rising of the sun to its going down,the Lord’s name is to be praised.4The Lord is high above all nations,his glory above the heavens.

5Who is like the Lord, our God,who has his seat on high,6who stoops down to see in heaven and on the earth?

7He raises up the poor out of the dust,and lifts up the needy from the ash heap,8that he may set him with princes,even with the princes of his people.

Second Reading1 Corinthians 1:18-25

From the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

18For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying,but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.19For it is written,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise.I will bring the discernment of the discerning to nothing.”

20Where is the wise?Where is the scribe?Where is the debater of this age?Hasn’t God made foolish the wisdom of this world?21For seeing that in the wisdom of God,the world through its wisdom didn’t know God,it was God’s good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save those who believe.22For Jews ask for signs, Greeks seek after wisdom,23but we preach Christ crucified,a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Greeks,24but to those who are called,both Jews and Greeks,Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God;25because the foolishness of God is wiser than men,and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

GospelJohn 19:25-27

From the Gospel according to John

25But standing by Jesus’ cross were his mother,his mother’s sister,Mary the wife of Clopas,and Mary Magdalene.26Therefore when Jesus saw his mother,and the disciple whom he loved standing there,he said to his mother,“Woman, behold, your son!”27Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!”From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home.

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Acts 8:5-8

In diébus illis: Philíppus descéndens in civitátem Samaríæ, prædicábat illis Christum. Intendébant autem turbæ his, quæ a Philíppo dicebántur, unanímiter audiéntes et vidéntes signa, quæ faciébat. Multi enim eórum, qui habébant spíritus immúndos, clamántes voce magna, exíbant. Multi autem paralýtici et claudi curáti sunt. Factum est ergo gáudium magnum in illa civitáte.

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 8:5-8

In those days, Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached the Christ to them. And the crowds with one accord gave heed to what was said by Philip, listening to him and seeing the miracles that he worked. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, went out of many possessed persons, and many paralytics and cripples were cured. So there was great joy in that city.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 9:1-6

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 9:1-6

At that time, having summoned the twelve apostles, Jesus gave them power and authority over all the devils, and to cure diseases. And He sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. And he said to them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and do not depart from thence. And whosoever will not receive you - go forth from that town, and shake off even the dust from your feet for a witness against them. And going forth, they went about from village to village, preaching the gospel and working cures everywhere.
