From the Book of Deuteronomy

1Now, Israel, listen to the statutesand to the ordinances which I teach you,to do them, that you may live and go inand possess the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, gives you.2You shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall you take away from it,that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your Godwhich I command you. verses 3–5 are not read6Keep therefore and do them;for this is your wisdomand your understanding in the sight of the peopleswho shall hear all these statutes and say,“Surely this great nation is a wiseand understanding people.”7For what great nation is therethat has a god so near to them as the Lord our God is whenever we call on him?8What great nation is there that has statutesand ordinances so righteous as all this lawwhich I set before you today?

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 15:2-3, 3-4, 4-5

2He who walks blamelessly and does what is right, and speaks truth in his heart;3he who doesn’t slander with his tongue,

3nor does evil to his friend, nor casts slurs against his fellow man;4in whose eyes a vile man is despised,

4but who honors those who fear the Lord;he who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and doesn’t change;5he who doesn’t lend out his money for usury, nor take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be shaken.

Second ReadingJames 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27

From the Letter of James

17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation nor turning shadow.18Of his own will he gave birth to us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. verses 19–20 are not read21Therefore, putting away all filthinessand overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. verses 23–26 are not read27Pure religionand undefiled before our God and Father is this:to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

GospelMark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

From the Gospel according to Mark

1Then the Phariseesand some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem.2Now when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is unwashed, hands, they found fault.3(For the Phariseesand all the Jews don’t eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders.4They don’t eatwhen they come from the marketplace unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other thingswhich they have received to hold to:washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.)5The Pharisees and the scribes asked him,“Why don’t your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?”

6He answered them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,

‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.7They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

8“For you set aside the commandment of God,and hold tightly to the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things.”

verses 9–13 are not read14He called all the multitude to himself and said to them,“Hear me, all of you, and understand.15There is nothing from outside of the manthat going into him can defile him;but the things which proceed out of the man are thosethat defile the man. verses 17–20 are not read21For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts,22covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires,an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.23All these evil things come from withinand defile the man.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

2 Cor 3:4-9

Lesson from the second letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

2 Cor. 3:4-9

Brethren: Such is the assurance I have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything, as from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God. He also it is Who has made us fit ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the spirit; for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life. Now if the ministration of death, which was engraved in letters upon stones, was inaugurated in such glory that the children of Israel could not look steadfastly upon the face of Moses on account of the transient glory that shone upon it, shall not the ministration of the spirit be still more glorious? For if there is glory in the ministration that condemned, much more does the ministration that justifies abound in glory.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 10:23-37

At ille dixit: Qui fecit misericórdiam in illum. Et ait illi Jesus: Vade, et tu fac simíliter.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 10:23-37

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I say to you, many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and they have not seen it; and to hear what you hear, and they have not heard it. And behold, a certain lawyer got up to test Him, saying, Master, what must I do to gain eternal life? But He said to him, What is written in the Law? How do you read? He answered and said, You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, and with your whole soul, and with your whole strength, and with your whole mind; and your neighbor as yourself. And He said to him, You have answered rightly; do this and you shall live. But he, wishing to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? Jesus answered and said, A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell in with robbers, who after both stripping him and beating him went their way, leaving him half-dead. But, as it happened, a certain priest was going down the same way; and when he saw him, he passed by. And likewise a Levite also, when he was near the place and saw him, passed by. But a certain Samaritan as he journeyed came upon him, and seeing him, was moved with compassion. And he went up to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And setting him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I, on my way back, will repay you.’ Which of these three, in your opinion, proved himself neighbor to him who fell among the robbers? And he said, He who took pity on him. And Jesus said to him, Go and do also in like manner.

Exod 32:11 32:13; 32:14

Moses prayed in the sight of the Lord his God and said, Why, O Lord, is Your indignation enkindled against Your people? Let the anger of Your mind cease; remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to whom You swore to give a land flowing with milk and honey. And the Lord was appeased from doing the evil which He had spoken of doing against His people.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:

Ps 103:13; 103:14-15

Ps 103:13-15

The earth is replete with the fruit of Your works, O Lord; You produce bread from the earth, and wine to gladden men’s hearts, so that their faces gleam with oil, and bread fortifies the hearts of men.
