First ReadingRomans 6:12-18

From the Letter of Paul to the Romans

12Therefore don’t let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.13Also, do not present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.14For sin will not have dominion over you,for you are not under law, but under grace.

15What then? Shall we sinbecause we are not under law but under grace?May it never be!16Don’t you know thatwhen you present yourselves as servants and obey someone, you are the servants of whomever you obey, whether of sin to death,or of obedience to righteousness?17But thanks be to God that, whereas you were bondservants of sin,you became obedient from the heart tothat form of teaching to which you were delivered.18Being made free from sin,you became bondservants of righteousness.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 124:1b-3, 4-6, 7-8

1If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, let Israel now say,2if it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us,3then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us,

4then the waters would have overwhelmed us,the stream would have gone over our soul.5Then the proud waters would have gone over our soul.6Blessed be the Lord, who has not given us as a prey to their teeth.

7Our soul has escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare. The snare is broken, and we have escaped.8Our help is in the Lord’s name, who made heaven and earth.

GospelLuke 12:39-48

From the Gospel according to Luke

39But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming,he would have watchedand not allowed his house to be broken into.40Therefore be ready also, for the Son of Man is coming in an hourthat you don’t expect him.”

41Peter said to him,“Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everybody?”

42The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household,to give them their portion of food at the right times?43Blessed is that servantwhom his lord will find doing so when he comes.44Truly I tell youthat he will set him over all that he has.45But if that servant says in his heart,‘My lord delays his coming,’and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and to be drunken,46then the lord of that servant will come in a daywhen he isn’t expecting himand in an hour that he doesn’t know, and will cut him in two,and place his portion with the unfaithful.47That servant who knew his lord’s will, and didn’t prepare nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes,48but he who didn’t know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required;and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.
