First Reading1 Kings 10:1-10

From the First Book of Kings

1When the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the Lord’s name, she came to test him with hard questions.2She came to Jerusalem with a very great caravan, with camels that bore spices, very much gold, and precious stones;and when she had come to Solomon, she talked with him about all that was in her heart.3Solomon answered all her questions. There wasn’t anything hidden from the kingwhich he didn’t tell her.4When the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built,5the food of his table, the sitting of his servants, the attendance of his officials, their clothing, his cup bearers, and his ascent by which he went up to the Lord’s house, there was no more spirit in her.6She said to the king,“It was a true reportthat I heard in my own land of your acts and of your wisdom.7However, I didn’t believe the words until I cameand my eyes had seen it.Behold, not even half was told me!Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame which I heard.8Happy are your men, happy are these your servantswho stand continually before you,who hear your wisdom.9Blessed is the Lord your God,who delighted in you,to set you on the throne of Israel.Because the Lord loved Israel forever, therefore he made you king,to do justice and righteousness.”10She gave the king one hundred twenty talents of gold, and a very great quantity of spices, and precious stones.Never again was there such an abundance of spices as thesewhich the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 37:5-6, 30-31, 39-40

5Commit your way to the Lord.Trust also in him, and he will do this:6he will make your righteousness shine out like light, and your justice as the noon day sun.

30The mouth of the righteous talks of wisdom. His tongue speaks justice.31The law of his God is in his heart.None of his steps shall slide.

39But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord.He is their stronghold in the time of trouble.40The Lord helps them and rescues them.He rescues them from the wicked and saves them, because they have taken refuge in him.

GospelMark 7:14-23

From the Gospel according to Mark

14He called all the multitude to himself and said to them,“Hear me, all of you, and understand.15There is nothing from outside of the manthat going into him can defile him;but the things which proceed out of the man are thosethat defile the man.

17When he had entered into a house away from the multitude, his disciples asked him about the parable.18He said to them, “Are you also without understanding?Don’t you perceivethat whatever goes into the man from outside can’t defile him,19because it doesn’t go into his heart, but into his stomach, then into the latrine, making all foods clean?”20He said, “That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man.21For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts,22covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires,an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.23All these evil things come from withinand defile the man.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

1 Cor 9:24-27; 10:1-5

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

1 Cor. 9:24-27; 10:1-5

Brethren: Do you not know that those who run in a race, all indeed run, but one receives the prize? So run as to obtain it. And everyone in a contest abstains from all things - and they indeed to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable. I, therefore, so run as not without a purpose; I so fight as not beating the air; but I chastise my body and bring it into subjection, lest perhaps after preaching to others I myself should be rejected. For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, all were baptized in Moses, in the cloud and in the sea. And all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink for they drank from the spiritual rock which followed them, and the rock was Christ. Yet with most of them God was not well pleased.

Ps 9:10-11; 9:19-20

Adjútor in opportunitátibus, in tribulatióne: sperent in te, qui novérunt te: quóniam non derelínquis quæréntes te, Dómine,

℣.Quóniam non in finem oblívio erit páuperis: patiéntia páuperum non períbit in ætérnum: exsúrge, Dómine, non præváleat homo.

Ps 9:10-11; 9:19-20

A helper in due time in tribulation. Let them trust in thee who know thy name: for thou hast not forsaken them that seek thee, O Lord.

For the poor man shall not be forgotten to the end: the patience of the poor shall not perish for ever. Arise, O Lord, let not man be strengthened.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 20:1-16

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 20:1-16

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. And having agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And about the third hour, he went out and saw others standing in the market place idle; and he said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is just.’ So they went. And again he went out about the sixth, and about the ninth hour, and did as before. But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing about and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’ They said to him, ‘Because no man has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard.’ But when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers, and pay them their wages, beginning from the last even to the first.’ Now when they of the eleventh hour came, they received each a denarius. And when the first in their term came, they thought that they would receive more; but they also received each his denarius. And on receiving it, they began to murmur against the householder, saying, ‘These last have worked a single hour, and you have put them on a level with us, who have borne the burden of the day’s heat.’ But answering one of them, he said, ‘Friend, I do you no injustice; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go; I choose to give to this last even as to you. Have I not a right to do what I choose? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ Even so the last shall be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few are chosen.

And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
