First Reading1 John 1:5—2:2

From the First Letter of John

5This is the message which we have heard from himand announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.6If we say that we have fellowship with himand walk in the darkness,we lie and don’t tell the truth.7But if we walk in the light as he is in the light,we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.8If we say that we have no sin,we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.9If we confess our sins,he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sinsand to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.10If we say that we haven’t sinned,we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1My little children,I write these things to you so that you may not sin.If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father,Jesus Christ, the righteous.2And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 124:2-3, 4-5, 7cd-8

2if it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us,3then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us,

4then the waters would have overwhelmed us,the stream would have gone over our soul.5Then the proud waters would have gone over our soul.

7Our soul has escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare. The snare is broken, and we have escaped.8Our help is in the Lord’s name, who made heaven and earth.

GospelMatthew 2:13-18

From the Gospel according to Matthew

13Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you,for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.”

14He arose and took the young childand his mother by night and departed into Egypt,15and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilledwhich was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

16Then Herod, when he sawthat he was mocked by the wise men,was exceedingly angry, and sent out and killed all the male childrenwho were in Bethlehemand in all the surrounding countryside, from two years old and under, according to the exact timewhich he had learned from the wise men.17Then that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,

18“A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping and great mourning,Rachel weeping for her children;she wouldn’t be comforted, because they are no more.”

Léctio libri Apocalýpsis beáti Joánnis Apóstoli

Apoc 14:1-5

Lesson from the book of Revelation

Apoc 14:1-5

In those days, I saw the Lamb standing upon Mount Sion, and with Him a hundred and forty-four thousand having His name and the name of His Father written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven like a voice of many waters, and like a voice of loud thunder; and the voice that I heard was as of harpers playing on their harps. And they were singing as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four living creatures and the elders; and no one could learn the song except those hundred and forty-four thousand, who have been purchased from the earth. These are they who were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were purchased from among men, first-fruits unto God and unto the Lamb, and in their mouth there was found no lie; they are without blemish before the throne of God.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secundum Matthǽum

Matt 2:13-18

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 2:13-18

At that time, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph, saying, Arise, and take the Child and His mother, and flee into Egypt, and remain there until I tell you. For Herod will seek the Child to destroy Him. So he arose, and took the Child and His mother by night, and withdrew into Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod; that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, Out of Egypt I called My Son. Then Herod, seeing that he had been tricked by the Magi, was exceedingly angry; and he sent and slew all the boys in Bethlehem and all its neighborhood who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had carefully ascertained from the Magi. Then was fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremias the prophet. A voice was heard in Rama, weeping and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be comforted, because they are no more.

Nativity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God, for through the Mystery of the Word made flesh, the new light of Thy glory hath shone upon the eyes of our mind, so that while we acknowledge God in visible form, we may through Him be drawn to the love of things invisible. And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Throne and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
