First ReadingIsaiah 61:9-11*

From the Book of Isaiah

9Their offspring will be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge them, that they are the offspring which the Lord has blessed.”10I will greatly rejoice in the Lord!My soul will be joyful in my God,for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation. He has covered me with the robe of righteousness,as a bridegroom decks himself with a garlandand as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.11For as the earth produces its bud,and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring up,so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

Responsorial Psalm1 Samuel 2:1, 4-5, 6-7, 8*

From the First Book of Samuel

1Hannah prayed, and said,

“My heart exults in the Lord!My horn is exalted in the Lord.My mouth is enlarged over my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation.

4“The bows of the mighty men are broken. Those who stumbled are armed with strength.5Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread. Those who were hungry are satisfied.Yes, the barren has borne seven. She who has many children languishes.

6“The Lord kills and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol and brings up.7The Lord makes poor and makes rich.He brings low, he also lifts up.

8He raises up the poor out of the dust.He lifts up the needy from the dunghillto make them sit with princesand inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s.He has set the world on them.

GospelLuke 2:41-51*

From the Gospel according to Luke

41His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover.42When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast;43and when they had fulfilled the days,as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.Joseph and his mother didn’t know it,44but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey;and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances.45When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him.46After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.47All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.48When they saw him, they were astonished;and his mother said to him,“Son, why have you treated us this way?Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.”

49He said to them, “Why were you looking for me?Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”50They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them.51And he went down with them and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Timótheum

2 Tim 4:1-8

Lesson from the second letter of St Paul the Apostle to Timothy

2 Tim 4:1-8

Dearly beloved: I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming, and his kingdom: Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine. For there shall be a time, when they will not endure sound doctrine; but, according to their own desires, they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: And will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labour in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord the just judge will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 14:26-35

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 14:26-35

At that time Jesus said to the multitudes, If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. And he who does not carry his cross and follow Me, cannot be My disciple. For which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not sit down first and calculate the outlays that are necessary, whether he has the means to complete it? Lest, after he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish, all who behold begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish!’ Or what king setting out to engage in battle with another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to meet him who with twenty thousand is coming against him? Or else, while the other is yet at a distance, he sends a delegation and asks the terms of peace. So, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all that he possesses, cannot be My disciple. Salt is good; but if even the salt loses its strength, what shall it be seasoned with? It is fit neither for the land nor for the manure heap, but must be thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
