First ReadingNumbers 12:1-13

From the Book of Numbers

1Miriam and Aaron spoke against Mosesbecause of the Cushite woman whom he had married;for he had married a Cushite woman.2They said, “Has the Lord indeed spoken only with Moses?Hasn’t he spoken also with us?”And the Lord heard it.

3Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all the menwho were on the surface of the earth.4The Lord spoke suddenly to Moses,to Aaron, and to Miriam,“You three come out to the Tent of Meeting!”

The three of them came out.5The Lord came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the door of the Tent, and called Aaron and Miriam;and they both came forward.6He said, “Now hear my words. If there is a prophet among you,I, the Lord, will make myself known to him in a vision.I will speak with him in a dream.7My servant Moses is not so.He is faithful in all my house.8With him, I will speak mouth to mouth, even plainly, and not in riddles;and he shall see the Lord’s form. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moses?”9The Lord’s anger burned against them;and he departed.

10The cloud departed from over the Tent;and behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow.Aaron looked at Miriam, and behold, she was leprous.

11Aaron said to Moses,“Oh, my lord, please don’t count this sin against us,in which we have done foolishly, and in which we have sinned.12Let her not, I pray,be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumedwhen he comes out of his mother’s womb.”

13Moses cried to the Lord, saying, “Heal her, God, I beg you!”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 51:3-4, 5-6ab, 6cd-7, 12-13

3Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness.According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.4Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity.Cleanse me from my sin.

5For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me.6Against you, and you only, I have sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight,

6so you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.7Behold, I was born in iniquity. My mother conceived me in sin.

12Create in me a clean heart, O God.Renew a right spirit within me.13Don’t throw me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.

GospelMatthew 14:22-36

From the Gospel according to Matthew

or Matthew 15:1-2, 10-14

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boatand go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.23After he had sent the multitudes away,he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.24But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.25In the fourth watch of the night,Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!”and they cried out for fear.27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up!It is I! Don’t be afraid.”

28Peter answered him and said,“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”

29He said, “Come!”

Peter stepped down from the boatand walked on the waters to come to Jesus.30But when he saw that the wind was strong,he was afraid, and beginning to sink,he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

31Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him,“You of little faith, why did you doubt?”32When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.33Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”

34When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.35When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding regionand brought to him all who were sick;36and they begged himthat they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:12-17

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:12-17

Brethren: We are debtors, not to the flesh, that we should live according to the flesh, for if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live. For whoever are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Now you have not received a spirit of bondage so as to be again in fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons, by virtue of which we cry, Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself gives testimony to our spirit that we are sons of God. But if we are sons, we are heirs also: heirs indeed of God and joint heirs with Christ.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 16:1-9

Ait autem víllicus intra se: Quid fáciam, quia dóminus meus aufert a me villicatiónem? fódere non váleo, mendicáre erubésco. Scio, quid fáciam, ut, cum amótus fúero a villicatióne, recípiant me in domos suas. Convocátis itaque síngulis debitóribus dómini sui, dicébat primo: Quantum debes dómino meo? At ille dixit: Centum cados ólei.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 16:1-9

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: There was a certain rich man who had a steward, who was reported to him as squandering his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear of you? Make an accounting of your stewardship, for you can be steward no longer.’ And the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do, seeing that my master is taking away the stewardship from me? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed. I know what I shall do, that when I am removed from my stewardship they may receive me into their houses.’ And he summoned each of his master’s debtors and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred jars of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and sit down at once and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘How much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred kors of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and write eighty.’ And the master commended the unjust steward, in that he had acted prudently; for the children of this world, in relation to their own generation, are more prudent than the children of the light. And I say to you, make friends for yourselves with the mammon of wickedness, so that when you fail they may receive you into the everlasting dwellings.
