First ReadingActs 8:26-40

From the Acts of the Apostles

26Then an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise, and go toward the south to the waythat goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a desert.”

27He arose and went;and behold, there was a man of Ethiopia,a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship.28He was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.

29The Spirit said to Philip,“Go near, and join yourself to this chariot.”

30Philip ran to him,and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?”

31He said, “How can I, unless someone explains it to me?”He begged Philip to come up and sit with him.32Now the passage of the Scripturewhich he was reading was this,

“He was led as a sheep to the slaughter. As a lamb before his shearer is silent,so he doesn’t open his mouth.33In his humiliation, his judgment was taken away.Who will declare His generation? For his life is taken from the earth.”

34The eunuch answered Philip,“Who is the prophet talking about?About himself, or about someone else?”

35Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture, preached to him about Jesus.36As they went on the way, they came to some water;and the eunuch said, “Behold, here is water. What is keeping me from being baptized?”38He commanded the chariot to stand still, and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.

39When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, and the eunuch didn’t see him any more, for he went on his way rejoicing.40But Philip was found at Azotus.Passing through, he preached the Good News to all the cities until he came to Caesarea.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 66:8-9, 16-17, 20

8Praise our God, you peoples!Make the sound of his praise heard,9who preserves our life among the living, and doesn’t allow our feet to be moved.

16Come and hear, all you who fear God.I will declare what he has done for my soul.17I cried to him with my mouth. He was extolled with my tongue.

20Blessed be God, who has not turned away my prayer, nor his loving kindness from me.

GospelJohn 6:44-51

From the Gospel according to John

44No one can come to me unless the Fatherwho sent me draws him;and I will raise him up in the last day.45It is written in the prophets,‘They will all be taught by God.’Therefore everyone who hears from the Fatherand has learned, comes to me.46Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God.He has seen the Father.47Most certainly, I tell you,he who believes in me has eternal life.48I am the bread of life.49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died.50This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die.51I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.Yes, the breadwhich I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

CollectOratio

Deus, qui beátum Hermenegíldum Mártyrem tuum cœlésti regno terrénum postpónere docuísti: da, quǽsumus, nobis; ejus exémplo cadúca despícere atque ætérna sectári.

Per Dominum…

O God, Who didst teach thy blessed Martyr Hermenegild to choose an heavenly rather than an earthly crown, grant, we beseech thee, that we, like him, may so pass through things temporal that we finally miss not those which are eternal.

Through our Lord…

EpistleLectio

Léctio libri Sapiéntiæ

Sap 10:10-14

Lesson from the book of Wisdom

Wis 10:10-14

She conducted the just, when he fled from his brother's wrath, through the right ways, and shewed him the kingdom of God, and gave him the knowledge of the holy things, made him honourable in his labours, and accomplished his labours. In the deceit of them that overreached him, she stood by him, and made him honourable. She kept him safe from his enemies, and she defended him from seducers, and gave him a strong conflict, that he might overcome, and know that wisdom is mightier than all. She forsook not the just when he was sold, but delivered him from sinners: she went down with him into the pit. And in bands she left him not, till she brought him the sceptre of the kingdom, and power against those that oppressed him: and shewed them to be liars that had accused him, and gave him everlasting glory.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 14:26-33

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 14:26-33.

At that time, Jesus said to the crowds, If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. And he who does not carry his cross and follow Me, cannot be My disciple. For which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not sit down first and calculate the outlays that are necessary, whether he has the means to complete it? Lest, after he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish, all who behold begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish!’ Or what king setting out to engage in battle with another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to meet him who with twenty thousand is coming against him? Or else, whilst the other is yet at a distance, he sends a delegation and asks the terms of peace. So, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all that he possesses, cannot be My disciple.

Paschalis

Easter

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, at all times to praise Thee, O Lord, but more gloriously especially in this season when Christ our Pasch was sacrificed. For He is the Lamb Who hath taken away the sins of the world: Who by dying hath destroyed our death: and by rising again hath restored us to life. And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
