First ReadingActs 1:15-17, 20-26

From the Acts of the Apostles

15In these days, Peter stood up in the middle of the disciples (and the number of names was about one hundred twenty), and said,16“Brothers, it was necessarythat this Scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to those who took Jesus.17For he was counted with us,and received his portion in this ministry. verses 18–19 are not read20For it is written in the book of Psalms,

‘Let his habitation be made desolate.Let no one dwell in it;’

and,

‘Let another take his office.’

21“Of the men therefore who have accompanied us all the timethat the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,22beginning from the baptism of John to the daythat he was received up from us,of these one must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

23They put forward two:Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.24They prayed and said,“You, Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two you have chosen25to take part in this ministryand apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.”26They drew lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias;and he was counted with the eleven apostles.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 113:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8

1Praise the Lord!Praise, you servants of the Lord, praise the Lord’s name.2Blessed be the Lord’s name, from this time forward and forever more.

3From the rising of the sun to its going down, the Lord’s name is to be praised.4The Lord is high above all nations, his glory above the heavens.

5Who is like the Lord, our God,who has his seat on high,6who stoops down to see in heaven and on the earth?

7He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts up the needy from the ash heap,8that he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.

GospelJohn 15:9-17

From the Gospel according to John

9Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you.Remain in my love.10If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandmentsand remain in his love.11I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you,and that your joy may be made full.

12“This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.13Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.14You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.15No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father,I have made known to you.16You didn’t choose me,but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain;that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name,he may give it to you.

17“I command these things to you, that you may love one another.

Léctio Actuum Apostólorum

Act 1:1-11

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 1:1-11

The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, of all things which Jesus began to do and to teach, until the day on which, giving commandments by the Holy Ghost to the Apostles whom he had chosen, he was taken up: To whom also He shewed Himself alive after His Passion by many proofs, for forty days appearing to them, and speaking of the Kingdom of God. And eating together with them, he commanded them, that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard - saith he - by My mouth; For John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. They therefore who were come together asked him, saying: Lord, wilt Thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? But He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or moments which the Father hath put in his own power: but you shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost coming upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the uttermost part of the earth. And when He had said these things, while they looked on, He was raised up: and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they were beholding him going up to heaven, behold two men stood by them in white garments, who also said: Ye men of Galilee, why stand you looking up to heaven? This Jesus, who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come, as you have seen him going into heaven.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Marcum.

Marc 16:14-20

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Mark

Mark 16:14-20

At length he appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and he upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen him after he was risen again. And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover. And the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God. But they going forth preached everywhere, the Lord working withal, and confirming the word with signs that followed.

Ascension

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Who, after His Resurrection, appeared openly to all His disciples, and, while they looked on, was taken up into heaven, that He might grant unto us to be sharers in His own divinity. And therefore, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
