First Reading1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a

From the First Book of Kings

9He came to a cave there, and camped there;and behold, the Lord’s word came to him,and he said to him,“What are you doing here, Elijah?”

verse 10 is not read11He said, “Go outand stand on the mountain before the Lord.”

Behold, the Lord passed by,and a great and strong wind tore the mountainsand broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord;but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake;but the Lord was not in the earthquake.12After the earthquake a fire passed;but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a still small voice.13When Elijah heard it,he wrapped his face in his mantle, went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave.Behold, a voice came to him,and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 85:9, 10, 11-12, 13-14

9I will hear what God, the Lord, will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, his saints;but let them not turn again to folly.

10Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.

11Mercy and truth meet together.Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.12Truth springs out of the earth.Righteousness has looked down from heaven.

13Yes, the Lord will give that which is good. Our land will yield its increase.14Righteousness goes before him,and prepares the way for his steps.

Second ReadingRomans 9:1-5

From the Letter of Paul to the Romans

1I tell the truth in Christ.I am not lying, my conscience testifying with me in the Holy Spirit2that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart.3For I could wishthat I myself were accursed from Christ for my brothers’ sake,my relatives according to the flesh4who are Israelites;whose is the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law,the service, and the promises;5of whom are the fathers, and from whom is Christ as concerning the flesh, who is over all, God,blessed forever. Amen.

GospelMatthew 14:22-33

From the Gospel according to Matthew

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boatand go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.23After he had sent the multitudes away,he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.24But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.25In the fourth watch of the night,Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!”and they cried out for fear.27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up!It is I! Don’t be afraid.”

28Peter answered him and said,“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”

29He said, “Come!”

Peter stepped down from the boatand walked on the waters to come to Jesus.30But when he saw that the wind was strong,he was afraid, and beginning to sink,he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

31Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him,“You of little faith, why did you doubt?”32When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.33Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:12-17

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:12-17

Brethren: We are debtors, not to the flesh, that we should live according to the flesh, for if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live. For whoever are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Now you have not received a spirit of bondage so as to be again in fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons, by virtue of which we cry, Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself gives testimony to our spirit that we are sons of God. But if we are sons, we are heirs also: heirs indeed of God and joint heirs with Christ.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 16:1-9

Ait autem víllicus intra se: Quid fáciam, quia dóminus meus aufert a me villicatiónem? fódere non váleo, mendicáre erubésco. Scio, quid fáciam, ut, cum amótus fúero a villicatióne, recípiant me in domos suas. Convocátis itaque síngulis debitóribus dómini sui, dicébat primo: Quantum debes dómino meo? At ille dixit: Centum cados ólei.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 16:1-9

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: There was a certain rich man who had a steward, who was reported to him as squandering his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear of you? Make an accounting of your stewardship, for you can be steward no longer.’ And the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do, seeing that my master is taking away the stewardship from me? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed. I know what I shall do, that when I am removed from my stewardship they may receive me into their houses.’ And he summoned each of his master’s debtors and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred jars of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and sit down at once and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘How much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred kors of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and write eighty.’ And the master commended the unjust steward, in that he had acted prudently; for the children of this world, in relation to their own generation, are more prudent than the children of the light. And I say to you, make friends for yourselves with the mammon of wickedness, so that when you fail they may receive you into the everlasting dwellings.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
