First Reading1 Kings 17:7-16

From the First Book of Kings

7After a while, the brook dried up,because there was no rain in the land.

8The Lord’s word came to him, saying,9“Arise, go to Zarephath,which belongs to Sidon, and stay there.Behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain you.”

10So he arose and went to Zarephath;and when he came to the gate of the city,behold, a widow was there gathering sticks.He called to her and said,“Please get me a little water in a jar,that I may drink.”

11As she was going to get it,he called to her and said,“Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

12She said, “As the Lord your God lives,I don’t have anything baked,but only a handful of meal in a jarand a little oil in a jar.Behold, I am gathering two sticks,that I may go in and bake it for me and my son,that we may eat it, and die.”

13Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid.Go and do as you have said;but make me a little cake from it first,and bring it out to me,and afterward make some for you and for your son.14For the Lord, the God of Israel,says, ‘The jar of meal will not run out,and the jar of oil will not fail,until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.’”

15She went and did according to the saying of Elijah;and she, he, and her household ate many days.16The jar of meal didn’t run outand the jar of oil didn’t fail,according to the Lord’s word,which he spoke by Elijah.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 4:2-3, 4-5, 7b-8

2Answer me when I call, God of my righteousness.Give me relief from my distress.Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.3You sons of men, how long shall my glory be turned into dishonor?Will you love vanity and seek after falsehood?

4But know that the Lord has set apart for himself him who is godly;The Lord will hear when I call to him.5Stand in awe, and don’t sin.Search your own heart on your bed, and be still.

7Many say, “Who will show us any good?”Lord, let the light of your face shine on us.8You have put gladness in my heart,more than when their grain and their new wine are increased.

GospelMatthew 5:13-16

From the Gospel according to Matthew

13“You are the salt of the earth,but if the salt has lost its flavor,with what will it be salted?It is then good for nothing,but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.

14“You are the light of the world.A city located on a hill can’t be hidden.15Neither do you light a lampand put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand;and it shines to all who are in the house.16Even so, let your light shine before men,that they may see your good worksand glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Acts 8:14-17

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 8:14-17.

In those days, when the Apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John. On their arrival they prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for as yet He had not come upon any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem

Joannes 10:1-10

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 10:1-10.

At that time, Jesus said to the Pharisees, Amen, amen, I say to you, he who enters not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up another way, is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is shepherd of the sheep. To this man the gatekeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them forth. And when he has let out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. But a stranger they will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers. This parable Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what He was saying to them. Again, therefore, Jesus said to them, Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All whoever have come are thieves and robbers; but the sheep have not heard them. I am the door. If anyone enter by Me he shall be safe, and shall go in and out, and shall find pastures. The thief comes only to steal, and slay, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.
