First ReadingGenesis 1:20—2:4a

From the Book of Genesis

20God said, “Let the waters abound with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.”21God created the large sea creaturesand every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind.God saw that it was good.22God blessed them, saying,“Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”23There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

24God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind;”and it was so.25God made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind.God saw that it was good.

26God said, “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness.Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,and over the birds of the sky,and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”27God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him;male and female he created them.28God blessed them.God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it.Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky,and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”29God said, “Behold,I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed.It will be your food.30To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky,and to everything that creeps on the earth,in which there is life,I have given every green herb for food;”and it was so.

31God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

1The heavens, the earth, and all their vast array were finished.2On the seventh day God finished his work which he had done;and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done.3God blessed the seventh day,and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work of creation which he had done.

4This is the history of the generations of the heavensand of the earth when they were created,in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 8:4-5, 6-7, 8-9

4When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained,5what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him?

6For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor.7You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet:

8All sheep and cattle, yes, and the animals of the field,9the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea,and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

GospelMark 7:1-13

From the Gospel according to Mark

1Then the Phariseesand some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem.2Now when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is unwashed, hands, they found fault.3(For the Phariseesand all the Jews don’t eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders.4They don’t eatwhen they come from the marketplace unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other thingswhich they have received to hold to:washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.)5The Pharisees and the scribes asked him,“Why don’t your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?”

6He answered them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,

‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.7They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

8“For you set aside the commandment of God,and hold tightly to the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things.”9He said to them, “Full well do you reject the commandment of God,that you may keep your tradition.10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother;’and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’11But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother,“Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban,”’”that is to say, given to God,12“then you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother,13making void the word of God by your traditionwhich you have handed down. You do many things like this.”

2 Cor 10:17-18; 11:1-2

Fratres: Qui gloriátur, in Dómino gloriétur.

Lesson from the second letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

2 Cor 10:17-18; 11:1-2

Brothers: He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commendeth himself, is approved, but he, whom God commendeth. Would to God you could bear with some little of my folly: but do bear with me. For I am jealous of you with the jealousy of God. For I have espoused you to one husband that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 25:1-13

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis parábolam hanc: Símile erit regnum coelórum decem virgínibus: quæ, accipiéntes lámpades suas, exiérunt óbviam sponso et sponsæ. At ille respóndens, ait: Amen, dico vobis, néscio vos. Vigiláte ítaque, quia nescítis diem neque horam.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 25:1-13.

At that time Jesus spoke this parable to His disciples: “Then will the kingdom of heaven be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went forth to meet the bridegroom and the bride. Five of them were foolish and five wise. But the five foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them, while the wise did take oil in their vessels with the lamps. Then as the bridegroom was long in coming, they all became drowsy and slept. And at midnight a cry arose, 'Behold, the bridegroom is coming, go forth to meet him!' Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' The wise answered, saying, 'Lest there may not be enough for us and for you, go rather to those who sell it, and buy some for yourselves.' Now while they were gone to buy it, the bridegroom came; and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Finally there came also the other virgins, who said, 'Sir, sir, open the door for us!' But he answered and said, 'Amen I say to you, I do not know you.' Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
