First Reading1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21

From the First Book of Kings

16Anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel;and anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place.

verses 17–18 are not read19So he departed from thereand found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him,and he with the twelfth.Elijah went over to him and put his mantle on him.20Elisha left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me please kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.”

He said to him, “Go back again;for what have I done to you?”

21He returned from following him,and took the yoke of oxen, killed them, and boiled their meat with the oxen’s equipment, and gave to the people;and they ate. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and served him.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 16:1-2a and 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11*

1Preserve me, God, for I take refuge in you.2My soul, you have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord.Apart from you I have no good thing.”5The Lord assigned my portion and my cup.You made my lot secure.

7I will bless the Lord, who has given me counsel.Yes, my heart instructs me in the night seasons.8I have set the Lord always before me.Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9Therefore my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoices. My body shall also dwell in safety.10For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your holy one to see corruption.

11You will show me the path of life.In your presence is fullness of joy.In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

Second ReadingGalatians 5:1, 13-18

From the Letter of Paul to the Galatians

1Stand firm therefore in the liberty bywhich Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

verses 2–12 are not read13For you, brothers, were called for freedom.Only don’t use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.14For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, in this:“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”15But if you bite and devour one another,be careful that you don’t consume one another.

16But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.17For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh;and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire.18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

GospelLuke 9:51-62

From the Gospel according to Luke

51It came to pass, when the days were nearthat he should be taken up,he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem52and sent messengers before his face. They went and entered into a village of the Samaritans,so as to prepare for him.53They didn’t receive him, because he was traveling with his face set toward Jerusalem.54When his disciples,James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?”

55But he turned and rebuked them,“You don’t know of what kind of spirit you are.56For the Son of Man didn’t come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”

They went to another village.57As they went on the way,a certain man said to him,“I want to follow you wherever you go, Lord.”

58Jesus said to him,“The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

59He said to another, “Follow me!”

But he said, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”

60But Jesus said to him,“Leave the dead to bury their own dead, but you go and announce God’s Kingdom.”

61Another also said,“I want to follow you,Lord, but first allow me to say good-bye to thosewho are at my house.”

62But Jesus said to him,“No one, having put his hand to the plow and looking back,is fit for God’s Kingdom.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 6:3-11

Fratres: Quicúmque baptizáti sumus in Christo Jesu, in morte ipsíus baptizáti sumus.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 6:3-11.

Brethren: All we who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death. For we were buried with Him by means of Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ has arisen from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall be so in the likeness of His resurrection also. For we know that our old self has been crucified with Him, in order that the body of sin may be destroyed, that we may no longer be slaves to sin; for he who is dead is acquitted of sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live together with Christ; for we know that Christ, having risen from the dead, dies now no more, death shall no longer have dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life that He lives, He lives unto God. Thus do you consider yourselves also as dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Marcum

Marc 8:1-9

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Mark

Mark 8:1-9

At that time, when there was a great crowd with Jesus, and they had nothing to eat, He called His disciples together and said to them, I have compassion on the crowd, for behold, they have now been with Me three days, and have nothing to eat; and if I send them away to their homes fasting, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come from a distance. And His disciples answered Him, How will anyone be able to satisfy these with bread, here in a desert? And He asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven. And He bade the crowd recline on the ground. Then taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to distribute; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few little fishes; and He blessed them, and ordered them to be distributed. And they ate and were satisfied; and they took up what was left of the fragments, seven baskets. Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He dismissed them.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
