First ReadingJob 1:6-22

From the Book of Job

6Now on the daywhen God’s sons came to present themselves before the Lord,Satan also came among them.7The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, “From going back and forth on the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

8The Lord said to Satan,“Have you considered my servant, Job?For there is no one like him on the earth,a blameless and an upright man,one who fears God,and turns away from evil.”

9Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?10Haven’t you made a hedge around him,and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.11But stretch out your hand now,and touch all that he has,and he will renounce you to your face.”

12The Lord said to Satan,“Behold, all that he has is in your power.Only on himself don’t stretch out your hand.”

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.13It fell on a day when his sonsand his daughters were eatingand drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,14that a messenger came to Job,and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them,15and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away.Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

16While he was still speaking, another also came and said,“The fire of God has fallen from the sky,and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

17While he was still speaking, another also came and said,“The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword;and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

18While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eatingand drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,19and behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men,and they are dead.I alone have escaped to tell you.”

20Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped.21He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away.Blessed be the Lord’s name.”22In all this, Job didn’t sin,nor charge God with wrongdoing.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 17:1bcd, 2-3, 6-7

1Hear, Lord, my righteous plea.Give ear to my prayer that doesn’t go out of deceitful lips.

2Let my sentence come out of your presence.Let your eyes look on equity.3You have proved my heart. You have visited me in the night. You have tried me, and found nothing.I have resolved that my mouth shall not disobey.

6I have called on you, for you will answer me, God.Turn your ear to me.Hear my speech.7Show your marvelous loving kindness, you who save those who take refuge by your right hand from their enemies.

GospelLuke 9:46-50

From the Gospel according to Luke

46An argument arose among them aboutwhich of them was the greatest.47Jesus, perceiving the reasoning of their hearts, took a little child, and set him by his side,48and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me.Whoever receives me receives him who sent me.For whoever is least among you all, this one will be great.”

49John answered, “Master,we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow with us.”

50Jesus said to him,“Don’t forbid him,for he who is not against us is for us.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Ephésios

Ephes 4:23-28

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians

Eph 4:23-28

Brethren: Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, which has been created according to God in justice and holiness of truth. Wherefore, put away lying and speak truth each one with his neighbor, because we are members of one another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down upon your anger; do not give place to the devil. He who was wont to steal, let him steal no longer; but rather let him labor, working with his hands at what is good, that he may have something to share with him who suffers need.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 22:1-14

At ille obmútuit. Tunc dixit rex minístris: Ligátis mánibus et pédibus ejus, míttite eum in ténebras exterióres: ibi erit fletus et stridor déntium. Multi enim sunt vocáti, pauci vero elécti.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 22:1-14

At that time, Jesus spoke to the chief priests and the Pharisees in parables, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a king who made a marriage feast for his son. And he sent his servants to call in those invited to the marriage feast, but they would not come. Again he sent out other servants, saying, “Tell those who are invited, behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatlings are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.” But they made light of it, and went off, one to his farm, and another to his business; and the rest laid hold of his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. But when the king heard of it, he was angry; and he sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city. Then he said to his servants, “The marriage feast indeed is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy; go therefore to the crossroads, and invite to the marriage feast whomever you shall find.” And his servants went out into the roads, and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; and the marriage feast was filled with guests. Now the king went in to see the guests, and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment. And he said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” But he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind his hands and feet and cast him forth into the darkness outside, where there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.” For many are called, but few are chosen.
