First ReadingActs 16:22-34

From the Acts of the Apostles

22The multitude rose up together against themand the magistrates tore their clothes from them, then commanded them to be beaten with rods.23When they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely.24Having received such a command,he threw them into the inner prisonand secured their feet in the stocks.

25But about midnight Paul and Silas were prayingand singing hymns to God,and the prisoners were listening to them.26Suddenly there was a great earthquake,so that the foundations of the prison were shaken;and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were loosened.27The jailer, being roused out of sleepand seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.28But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, “Don’t harm yourself, for we are all here!”

29He called for lights, sprang in, fell down trembling before Paul and Silas,30brought them out, and said,“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”32They spoke the word of the Lord to him,and to all who were in his house.

33He took them the same hour of the nightand washed their stripes, and was immediately baptized,he and all his household.34He brought them up into his houseand set food before them, and rejoiced greatly with all his household, having believed in God.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 138:1-2ab, 2cde-3, 7c-8

1I will give you thanks with my whole heart. Before the gods, I will sing praises to you.2I will bow down toward your holy temple,

2and give thanks to your Name for your loving kindness and for your truth;for you have exalted your Name and your Word above all.3In the day that I called, you answered me.You encouraged me with strength in my soul.

7Though I walk in the middle of trouble, you will revive me.You will stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies.Your right hand will save me.8The Lord will fulfill that which concerns me.Your loving kindness, Lord, endures forever.Don’t forsake the works of your own hands.

GospelJohn 16:5-11

From the Gospel according to John

5But now I am going to him who sent me,and none of you asks me,‘Where are you going?’6But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.7Nevertheless I tell you the truth:It is to your advantage that I go away;for if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you.But if I go, I will send him to you.8When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment;9about sin, because they don’t believe in me;10about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you won’t see me any more;11about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Jacóbi Apóstoli

Jas 1:22-27

Lesson from the letter of St James the Apostle

Jas 1:22-27

Dearly beloved: But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if a man be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he shall be compared to a man beholding his own countenance in a glass. For he beheld himself, and went his way, and presently forgot what manner of man he was. But he that hath looked into the perfect law of liberty, and hath continued therein, not becoming a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work; this man shall be blessed in his deed. And if any man think himself to be religious, not bridling his tongue, but deceiving his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem

Joann 16:23-30

Hæc in provérbiis locútus sum vobis.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 16:23-30

In that time, Jesus said to His disciples: Amen, amen I say to you: if you ask the Father any thing in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto you have not asked any thing in my name. Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full. These things I have spoken to you in proverbs. The hour cometh, when I will no more speak to you in proverbs, but will shew you plainly of the Father. In that day you shall ask in my name; and I say not to you, that I will ask the Father for you: For the Father himself loveth you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again I leave the world, and I go to the Father. His disciples say to him: Behold, now thou speakest plainly, and speakest no proverb. Now we know that thou knowest all things, and thou needest not that any man should ask thee. By this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

Ps 65:8-9; 65:20

O bless our God, ye Gentiles: and make the voice of his praise to be heard. Who hath set my soul to live: and hath not suffered my feet to be moved: Blessed be God, who hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me, allelúja.

Easter

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, at all times to praise Thee, O Lord, but more gloriously especially in this season when Christ our Pasch was sacrificed. For He is the Lamb Who hath taken away the sins of the world: Who by dying hath destroyed our death: and by rising again hath restored us to life. And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Jacóbi Apóstoli.

Jas 5:16-20

Lesson from the letter of St James the Apostle

Jas 5:16-20

Dearly beloved: Confess therefore your sins one to another: and pray one for another, that you may be saved. For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much. Elias was a man passible like unto us: and with prayer he prayed that it might not rain upon the earth, and it rained not for three years and six months. And he prayed again: and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. My brethren, if any of you err from the truth, and one convert him: He must know that he who causeth a sinner to be converted from the error of his way, shall save his soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of sins.

Confitémini Dómino, quóniam bonus: quóniam in sǽculum misericórdia ejus.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 11:5-13

In that time: Jesus said to His disciples: Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go to him at midnight, and shall say to him: Friend, lend me three loaves, Because a friend of mine is come off his journey to me, and I have not what to set before him. And he from within should answer, and say: Trouble me not, the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. Yet if he shall continue knocking, I say to you, although he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend; yet, because of his importunity, he will rise, and give him as many as he needeth. And I say to you, Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you. For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened. And which of you, if he ask his father bread, will he give him a stone? or a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he reach him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father from heaven give the good Spirit to them that ask him?
