First ReadingDaniel 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28

From the Book of Daniel

1Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.2Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded that the golden and silver vesselswhich Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the templewhich was in Jerusalem be brought to him, that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink from them.3Then they brought the golden vesselsthat were taken out of the temple of God’s housewhich was at Jerusalem;and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them.4They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of bronze,of iron, of wood, and of stone.

5In the same hour, the fingers of a man’s hand came outand wrote near the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace. The king saw the part of the hand that wrote.6Then the king’s face was changed in him,and his thoughts troubled him;and the joints of his thighs were loosened, and his knees struck one against another.

verses 7–12 are not read13Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel,“Are you that Daniel of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?14I have heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you,and that light, understanding, and excellent wisdom are found in you. verse 15 is not read16But I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and dissolve doubts. Now if you can read the writing, and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

17Then Daniel answered the king,“Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another.Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation. verses 18–22 are not read23but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven;and they have brought the vessels of his house before you,and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, hear, or know;and you have not glorified the God in whose hand is your breathand whose are all your ways.24Then the part of the hand was sent from before him,and this writing was inscribed.

25“This is the writing that was inscribed:‘MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.’

26“This is the interpretation of the thing:

MENE: God has counted your kingdom, and brought it to an end.

27TEKEL: you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.

28PERES: your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.”

Responsorial PsalmDaniel 3:62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67

From the Book of Daniel

62O you sun and moon, bless the Lord!Praise and exalt him above all forever!

63O you stars of heaven, bless the Lord!Praise and exalt him above all forever!

64O every shower and dew, bless the Lord!Praise and exalt him above all forever!

65O all you winds, bless the Lord!Praise and exalt him above all forever!

66O you fire and heat, bless the Lord!Praise and exalt him above all forever!

67O you cold and heat, bless the Lord!Praise and exalt him above all forever!

GospelLuke 21:12-19

From the Gospel according to Luke

12But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you up to synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kingsand governors for my name’s sake.13It will turn out as a testimony for you.14Settle it therefore in your hearts not to meditate beforehand how to answer,15for I will give you a mouth and wisdomwhich all your adversaries will not be able to withstand or to contradict.16You will be handed over even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will cause some of you to be put to death.17You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake.18And not a hair of your head will perish.

19“By your endurance you will win your lives.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Timótheum

2 Tim 4:1-8

Lesson from the second letter of St Paul the Apostle to Timothy

2 Tim 4:1-8

Dearly beloved: I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming, and his kingdom: Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine. For there shall be a time, when they will not endure sound doctrine; but, according to their own desires, they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: And will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labour in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord the just judge will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 5:13-19

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis: Vos estis sal terræ.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 5:13-19

In that time Jesus said to His disciples: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
