First ReadingEzekiel 18:1-10, 13b, 30-32*

From the Book of Ezekiel

1The Lord’s word came to me again, saying,2“What do you mean, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying,

‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?

3“As I live,” says the Lord GOD,“you shall not use this proverb any more in Israel.4Behold, all souls are mine;as the soul of the father,so also the soul of the son is mine. The soul who sins, he shall die.

5“But if a man is just, and does that which is lawful and right,6and has not eaten on the mountains, hasn’t lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hasn’t defiled his neighbor’s wife, hasn’t come near a woman in her impurity,7and has not wronged any,but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has taken nothing by robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;8he who hasn’t lent to them with interest, hasn’t taken any increase from them, who has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true justice between man and man,9has walked in my statutes, and has kept my ordinances,to deal truly;he is just,he shall surely live,” says the Lord GOD.

10“If he fathers a son who is a robber who sheds blood, and who does any one of these things,

verses 11–12 are not read13has lent with interest, and has taken increase from the poor,

shall he then live?He shall not live.He has done all these abominations. He shall surely die.His blood will be on him.

verses 14–29 are not read30“Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways,”says the Lord GOD.“Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions,so iniquity will not be your ruin.31Cast away from you all your transgressions inwhich you have transgressed;and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit. For why will you die, house of Israel?32For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies,”says the Lord GOD.“Therefore turn yourselves, and live!

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19*

12Create in me a clean heart, O God.Renew a right spirit within me.13Don’t throw me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.

14Restore to me the joy of your salvation.Uphold me with a willing spirit.15Then I will teach transgressors your ways.Sinners will be converted to you.

18For you don’t delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it.You have no pleasure in burnt offering.19The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.O God, you will not despise a broken and contrite heart.

GospelMatthew 19:13-15

From the Gospel according to Matthew

13Then little children were brought to himthat he should lay his hands on them and pray;and the disciples rebuked them.14But Jesus said, “Allow the little children, and don’t forbid them to come to me;for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these.”15He laid his hands on them, and departed from there.

CollectOratio

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 31:8-11

Happy the man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain, nor puts his trust in money nor in treasures! Who is he, that we may praise him? For he has done wonders in his life. He has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory forever; he could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not, so that his possessions are secure in the Lord, and the assembly of the Saints shall recount his alms.

Ja 1:12

Ps 91:13; 91:14

The just man shall flourish like the palm tree, like a cedar of Lebanon shall he grow in the house of the Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 12:35-40

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 12:35-40

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, Let your loins be girt about and your lamps burning, and you yourselves like men waiting for their master’s return from the wedding; so that when he comes and knocks, they may straight-way open to him. Blessed are those servants whom the master, on his return, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, he will gird himself, and will make them recline at table, and will come and serve them. And if he comes in the second watch, and if in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants! But of this be assured, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would certainly have watched, and not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because at an hour that you do not expect, the Son of Man is coming.
