Optional memorial: Saint Henry

First ReadingIsaiah 7:1-9

From the Book of Isaiah

1In the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Syriaand Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to war against it,but could not prevail against it.2David’s house was told, “Syria is allied with Ephraim.”His heart trembled, and the heart of his people,as the trees of the forest tremble with the wind.

3Then the Lord said to Isaiah,“Go out now to meet Ahaz, you, and Shearjashub your son,at the end of the conduit of the upper pool,on the highway of the fuller’s field.4Tell him, ‘Be careful, and keep calm.Don’t be afraid, neither let your heart be faintbecause of these two tails of smoking torches, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.5Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have plotted evil against you, saying,6“Let’s go up against Judah, and tear it apart, and let’s divide it among ourselves, and set up a king within it,even the son of Tabeel.”7This is what the Lord GOD says:“It shall not stand, neither shall it happen.”8For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin.Within sixty-five years Ephraim shall be broken in pieces,so that it shall not be a people.9The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son.If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.’”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 48:2-3a, 3b-4, 5-6, 7-8

2Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.3Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth,

3is Mount Zion, on the north sides, the city of the great King.4God has shown himself in her citadels as a refuge.

5For, behold, the kings assembled themselves, they passed by together.6They saw it, then they were amazed. They were dismayed. They hurried away.

7Trembling took hold of them there, pain, as of a woman in travail.8With the east wind, you break the ships of Tarshish.

GospelMatthew 11:20-24

From the Gospel according to Matthew

20Then he began to denounce the cities inwhich most of his mighty works had been done, because they didn’t repent.21“Woe to you, Chorazin!Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works had been done in Tyreand Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.22But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyreand Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.23You, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, you will go down to Hades. For if the mighty works had been done in Sodomwhich were done in you,it would have remained until today.24But I tell youthat it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment, than for you.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:12-17

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:12-17

Brethren: We are debtors, not to the flesh, that we should live according to the flesh, for if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live. For whoever are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Now you have not received a spirit of bondage so as to be again in fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons, by virtue of which we cry, Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself gives testimony to our spirit that we are sons of God. But if we are sons, we are heirs also: heirs indeed of God and joint heirs with Christ.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 16:1-9

Ait autem víllicus intra se: Quid fáciam, quia dóminus meus aufert a me villicatiónem? fódere non váleo, mendicáre erubésco. Scio, quid fáciam, ut, cum amótus fúero a villicatióne, recípiant me in domos suas. Convocátis itaque síngulis debitóribus dómini sui, dicébat primo: Quantum debes dómino meo? At ille dixit: Centum cados ólei.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 16:1-9

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: There was a certain rich man who had a steward, who was reported to him as squandering his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear of you? Make an accounting of your stewardship, for you can be steward no longer.’ And the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do, seeing that my master is taking away the stewardship from me? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed. I know what I shall do, that when I am removed from my stewardship they may receive me into their houses.’ And he summoned each of his master’s debtors and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred jars of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and sit down at once and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘How much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred kors of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and write eighty.’ And the master commended the unjust steward, in that he had acted prudently; for the children of this world, in relation to their own generation, are more prudent than the children of the light. And I say to you, make friends for yourselves with the mammon of wickedness, so that when you fail they may receive you into the everlasting dwellings.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
