Optional memorial: Saint Edward the Confessor

First ReadingRomans 3:21-30

From the Letter of Paul to the Romans

21But now apart from the law,a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets;22even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to alland on all those who believe. For there is no distinction,23for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;24being justified freely by his grace through the redemptionthat is in Christ Jesus,25whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins,in God’s forbearance;26to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time, that he might himself be justand the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.

27Where then is the boasting? It is excluded.By what kind of law?Of works? No, but by a law of faith.28We maintain thereforethat a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.29Or is God the God of Jews only?Isn’t he the God of Gentiles also?Yes, of Gentiles also,30since indeed there is one Godwho will justify the circumcised by faithand the uncircumcised through faith.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 130:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6ab

1Out of the depths I have cried to you, Lord.2Lord, hear my voice.Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my petitions.

3If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,Lord, who could stand?4But there is forgiveness with you, therefore you are feared.

5I wait for the Lord.My soul waits.I hope in his word.6My soul longs for the Lord more than watchmen long for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

GospelLuke 11:47-54

From the Gospel according to Luke

47Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.48So you testify and consent to the works of your fathers. For they killed them, and you build their tombs.49Therefore also the wisdom of God said,‘I will send to them prophets and apostles;and some of them they will kill and persecute,50that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation,51from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.’Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.52Woe to you lawyers! For you took away the key of knowledge. You didn’t enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in, you hindered.”

53As he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be terribly angry, and to draw many things out of him,54lying in wait for him,and seeking to catch him in something he might say, that they might accuse him.

Léctio libri Sapiéntiæ

Eccli 31:8-11

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 31:8-11

Happy the man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain, nor puts his trust in money nor in treasures! Who is he, that we may praise him? For he has done wonders in his life. He has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory forever; he could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not, so that his possessions are secure in the Lord, and the assembly of the Saints shall recount his alms.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 12:35-40

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 12:35-40

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, Let your loins be girt about and your lamps burning, and you yourselves like men waiting for their master’s return from the wedding; so that when he comes and knocks, they may straight-way open to him. Blessed are those servants whom the master, on his return, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, he will gird himself, and will make them recline at table, and will come and serve them. And if he comes in the second watch, and if in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants! But of this be assured, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would certainly have watched, and not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because at an hour that you do not expect, the Son of Man is coming.
