First ReadingGenesis 23:1-4, 19; 24:1-8, 62-67

From the Book of Genesis

1Sarah lived one hundred twenty-seven years. This was the length of Sarah’s life.2Sarah died in Kiriath Arba (also called Hebron),in the land of Canaan.Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.3Abraham rose up from before his deadand spoke to the children of Heth, saying,4“I am a stranger and a foreigner living with you.Give me a possession of a burying-place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.” verses 5–18 are not read19After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre (that is,Hebron), in the land of Canaan.

some verses are not read1Abraham was old, and well advanced in age.The Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.2Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his house, who ruled over all that he had,“Please put your hand under my thigh.3I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.4But you shall go to my country, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

5The servant said to him,“What if the woman isn’t willing to follow me to this land?Must I bring your son again to the land you came from?”

6Abraham said to him,“Beware that you don’t bring my son there again.7The Lord, the God of heaven—who took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me, and who swore to me,saying, ‘I will give this land to your offspring—he will send his angel before you,and you shall take a wife for my son from there.8If the woman isn’t willing to follow you, then you shall be clear from this oath to me.Only you shall not bring my son there again.” verses 9–61 are not read62Isaac came from the way of Beer Lahai Roi,for he lived in the land of the South.63Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the evening. He lifted up his eyes and looked.Behold, there were camels coming.64Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she got off the camel.65She said to the servant,“Who is the man who is walking in the field to meet us?”

The servant said, “It is my master.”

She took her veil, and covered herself.66The servant told Isaac all the things that he had done.67Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife.He loved her.So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 106:1b-2, 3-4a, 4b-5

1Praise the Lord!Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.2Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord,or fully declare all his praise?

3Blessed are those who keep justice.Blessed is one who does what is right at all times.4Remember me, Lord, with the favor that you show to your people.

4Visit me with your salvation,5that I may see the prosperity of your chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory with your inheritance.

GospelMatthew 9:9-13

From the Gospel according to Matthew

9As Jesus passed by from there,he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax collection office. He said to him, “Follow me.”He got up and followed him.10As he sat in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners cameand sat down with Jesus and his disciples.11When the Pharisees saw it,they said to his disciples,“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

12When Jesus heard it,he said to them, “Thosewho are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.13But you go and learn what this means:‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 6:19-23

Quem ergo fructum habuístis tunc in illis, in quibus nunc erubéscitis? Nam finis illórum mors est. Nunc vero liberáti a peccáto, servi autem facti Deo, habétis fructum vestrum in sanctificatiónem, finem vero vitam ætérnam. Stipéndia enim peccáti mors. Grátia autem Dei vita ætérna, in Christo Jesu, Dómino nostro.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 6:19-23

Brethren: I speak in a human way because of the weakness of your flesh; for as you yielded your members as slaves of uncleanness and iniquity unto iniquity, so now yield your members as slaves of justice unto sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free as regards justice. But what fruit had you then from those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of these things is death. But now set free from sin and become slaves to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and as your end, life everlasting. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is life everlasting in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 7:15-21

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 7:15-21

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. By their fruits you will know them. Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore, by their fruits you will know them. Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father in heaven shall enter the kingdom of heaven.

Dan 3:40

Sicut in holocáustis aríetum et taurórum, et sicut in mílibus agnórum pínguium: sic fiat sacrifícium nostrum in conspéctu tuo hódie, ut pláceat tibi: quia non est confúsio confidéntibus in te, Dómine.

Dan 3:40

As though it were holocausts of rams and bullocks, or thousands of fat lambs, so let our sacrifice be in Your presence today, that it may please You; for those who trust in You cannot be put to shame, O Lord.

SecretSecreta

O God, You Who have given us in one perfect sacrifice the fulfillment of the various sacrifices made under the Old Law, accept these sacrificial gifts offered You by Your devoted servants, and make them holy as You did the gifts of Abel, so that what each one of us has offered in praise of Your majesty may profit for the salvation of all.
