First ReadingJeremiah 14:17-22

From the Book of Jeremiah

17“You shall say this word to them:

“‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day,and let them not cease;for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound.18If I go out into the field, then behold, the slain with the sword! If I enter into the city, then behold, those who are sick with famine! For both the prophet and the priest go about in the land, and have no knowledge.’”19Have you utterly rejected Judah?Has your soul loathed Zion? Why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us?We looked for peace, but no good came;and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!20We acknowledge, Lord, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers;for we have sinned against you.21Do not abhor us, for your name’s sake.Do not disgrace the throne of your glory.Remember, and don’t break your covenant with us.22Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain?Or can the sky give showers?Aren’t you he, the Lord our God?Therefore we will wait for you;for you have made all these things.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 79:8, 9, 11 and 13

8Don’t hold the iniquities of our forefathers against us.Let your tender mercies speedily meet us,for we are in desperate need.

9Help us, God of our salvation, for the glory of your name.Deliver us, and forgive our sins, for your name’s sake.

11Let the sighing of the prisoner come before you.According to the greatness of your power, preserve those who are sentenced to death.13So we, your people and sheep of your pasture, will give you thanks forever. We will praise you forever, to all generations.

GospelMatthew 13:36-43

From the Gospel according to Matthew

36Then Jesus sent the multitudes away, and went into the house. His disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the darnel weeds of the field.”

37He answered them, “Hewho sows the good seed is the Son of Man,38the field is the world, the good seeds are the children of the Kingdom, and the darnel weeds are the children of the evil one.39The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age,and the reapers are angels.40As therefore the darnel weeds are gathered upand burned with fire;so will it be at the end of this age.41The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather out of his Kingdom all thingsthat cause stumbling and those who do iniquity,42and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.43Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 6:3-11

Fratres: Quicúmque baptizáti sumus in Christo Jesu, in morte ipsíus baptizáti sumus.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 6:3-11.

Brethren: All we who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death. For we were buried with Him by means of Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ has arisen from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall be so in the likeness of His resurrection also. For we know that our old self has been crucified with Him, in order that the body of sin may be destroyed, that we may no longer be slaves to sin; for he who is dead is acquitted of sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live together with Christ; for we know that Christ, having risen from the dead, dies now no more, death shall no longer have dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life that He lives, He lives unto God. Thus do you consider yourselves also as dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Marcum

Marc 8:1-9

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Mark

Mark 8:1-9

At that time, when there was a great crowd with Jesus, and they had nothing to eat, He called His disciples together and said to them, I have compassion on the crowd, for behold, they have now been with Me three days, and have nothing to eat; and if I send them away to their homes fasting, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come from a distance. And His disciples answered Him, How will anyone be able to satisfy these with bread, here in a desert? And He asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven. And He bade the crowd recline on the ground. Then taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to distribute; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few little fishes; and He blessed them, and ordered them to be distributed. And they ate and were satisfied; and they took up what was left of the fragments, seven baskets. Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He dismissed them.

And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
