First ReadingDaniel 2:31-45

From the Book of Daniel

31“You, O king, saw, and behold, a great image. This image, which was mighty, and whose brightness was excellent, stood before you;and its appearance was terrifying.32As for this image, its head was of fine gold, its chest and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze,33its legs of iron, its feet part of iron, and part of clay.34You saw until a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feetthat were of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces.35Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were broken in pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors. The wind carried them away,so that no place was found for them. The stone that struck the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

36“This is the dream;and we will tell its interpretation before the king.37You, O king, are king of kings,to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, the strength, and the glory.38Wherever the children of men dwell,he has given the animals of the fieldand the birds of the sky into your hand, and has made you rule over them all.You are the head of gold.

39“After you, another kingdom will arisethat is inferior to you;and a third kingdom of bronze, which will rule over all the earth.40The fourth kingdom will be strong as iron, because iron breaks in pieces and subdues all things;and as iron that crushes all these,it will break in pieces and crush.41Whereas you saw the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, it will be a divided kingdom;but there will be in it of the strength of the iron, because you saw the iron mixed with miry clay.42As the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom will be partly strong, and partly brittle.43Whereas you saw the iron mixed with miry clay, they will mingle themselves with the seed of men;but they won’t cling to one another, even as iron does not mix with clay.

44“In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdomwhich will never be destroyed, nor will its sovereignty be left to another people;but it will break in piecesand consume all these kingdoms, and it will stand forever.45Because you sawthat a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. The great God has made known to the king what will happen hereafter. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”

Responsorial PsalmDaniel 3:57, 58, 59, 60, 61

59O you heavens, bless the Lord!Praise and exalt him above all for ever!

60O all you waters that are above the sky, bless the Lord!Praise and exalt him above all forever!

61O all you powers of the Lord, bless the Lord!Praise and exalt him above all forever!

GospelLuke 21:5-11

From the Gospel according to Luke

5As some were talking about the templeand how it was decorated with beautiful stones and gifts, he said,6“As for these things which you see,the days will come inwhich there will not be left here one stone on anotherthat will not be thrown down.”

7They asked him, “Teacher, so when will these things be?What is the sign that these things are about to happen?”

8He said, “Watch out that you don’t get led astray, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’and, ‘The time is at hand.’Therefore don’t follow them.9When you hear of wars and disturbances, don’t be terrified, for these things must happen first, but the end won’t come immediately.”

10Then he said to them,“Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.11There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues in various places. There will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

Eccli 51:13-17

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 51:13-17.

O Lord, my God, You have exalted my dwelling place upon the earth, and I have prayed for death to pass away. I called upon the Lord, the Father of my Lord, that He would not abandon me in the day of my trouble, and in the time of the proud without help. I will ever praise Your name, and will praise it with thanksgiving; and my prayer was heard. And You saved me from destruction, and delivered me from the evil time. For this reason I thank You and I praise You, O Lord, our God.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 25:1-13

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis parábolam hanc: Símile erit regnum coelórum decem virgínibus: quæ, accipiéntes lámpades suas, exiérunt óbviam sponso et sponsæ. At ille respóndens, ait: Amen, dico vobis, néscio vos. Vigiláte ítaque, quia nescítis diem neque horam.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 25:1-13.

At that time Jesus spoke this parable to His disciples: “Then will the kingdom of heaven be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went forth to meet the bridegroom and the bride. Five of them were foolish and five wise. But the five foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them, while the wise did take oil in their vessels with the lamps. Then as the bridegroom was long in coming, they all became drowsy and slept. And at midnight a cry arose, 'Behold, the bridegroom is coming, go forth to meet him!' Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' The wise answered, saying, 'Lest there may not be enough for us and for you, go rather to those who sell it, and buy some for yourselves.' Now while they were gone to buy it, the bridegroom came; and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Finally there came also the other virgins, who said, 'Sir, sir, open the door for us!' But he answered and said, 'Amen I say to you, I do not know you.' Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
