First Reading2 Peter 3:12-15a, 17-18

From the Second Letter of Peter

12looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God,which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?13But, according to his promise,we look for new heavens and a new earth,in which righteousness dwells.

14Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things,be diligent to be found in peace, without defect and blameless in his sight.15Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation;even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote to you, verse 16 is not read17You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness.18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lordand Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 90:2, 3-4, 10, 14 and 16a

2Before the mountains were born, before you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.

3You turn man to destruction, saying,“Return, you children of men.”4For a thousand years in your sight are just like yesterday when it is past, like a watch in the night.

10The days of our years are seventy,or even by reason of strength eighty years;yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away.

14Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.16Let your work appear to your servants, your glory to their children.

GospelMark 12:13-17

From the Gospel according to Mark

13They sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to him, that they might trap him with words.14When they had come, they asked him, “Teacher,we know that you are honest, and don’t defer to anyone;for you aren’t partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?15Shall we give, or shall we not give?”

But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why do you test me?Bring me a denarius, that I may see it.”

16They brought it.

He said to them, “Whose is this image and inscription?”

They said to him, “Caesar’s.”

17Jesus answered them,“Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,and to God the things that are God’s.”

They marveled greatly at him.

Léctio libri Sapiéntiæ

Sap 7:7-14

Lesson from the book of Wisdom

Wis 7:7-14.

I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her. Nor did I liken any priceless gem to her; because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire. Beyond health and comeliness I loved her, and I chose to have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never yields to sleep. Yet all good things together came to me in her company, and countless riches at her hands; and I rejoiced in them all, because Wisdom is their leader, though I had not known that she is the mother of these. Simply I learned about her, and ungrudgingly do I share - her riches I do not hide away; for to men she is an unfailing treasure; those who gain this treasure win the friendship of God, to Whom the gifts they have from discipline commend them.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 5:13-19

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis: Vos estis sal terræ.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 5:13-19

In that time Jesus said to His disciples: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
